The phone call came on this balmy night
that long distance call I have dreaded
"I'm going off to war tomorrow, Mom"
those words in my heart forever embedded
Please don't say you will worry Mom
it will make me be worried too
I want to keep my head and eyes clear
So that someday I can come home to you
Mom I love you very much you know
I always have and I always will
I will call you as often as I can
when the times are more peaceful and still
I know how much it breaks your heart
That I chose this worrisome path
But your pride in me keeps me going
and will bring peace to me in the aftermath
For now I have chosen this way of life
No promises can I make as to my fate
Know that I am walking tall and with pride
Because tomorrow I am going to Kuwait
Being a Soldier has been my lifelong dream
you know that deep in your heart
Your love for me will carry me through
No matter what distance we are apart

Written April 9, 2008, the day Shaun left for Kuwait. His phone call to me was received on April 8, 2008. He called his dad on April 9, 2008 from the Airport in Germany, waiting for his plane to come, so he could be on his way to train for his service in the war in Iraq.
