red wine, black tea, good hash, bad weather, neil young, bob dylan, old men, young women, the dubliners, luke kelly, full beards, empty bellies, heartbreaks, tom waits, guilt, fear, paddy reilly, burnin spear. life, death and everything in between. amen
My name is Gordon Reeves, I'm from North Dublin, Ireland.
And I don't know what I am. I'm not sure I even want to know what I am or what the type of music I make is called. But curiousity got the better of me. I even went as far as a dictionary for an anwser. Some people have called me a folk singer. Theres a million definitions of what a folk singer is and some of them very specific! But I couldn't say I fit into any of them. "Music which arises from the circumstances of the common man" - that is the closest one that gave me any real inclusion. Somewhere I read Louis Armstrong said "all music is folk music, leastwise I ain't never heard a horse sing." Those words sums up my feelings more than any other I could find.
I was lucky enough to have the good fortune to meet a German on my travels who heard me play some songs and liked what he heard. This man, Frank Scheller is his name, offered me the invitation to come and record in his studio in Germany. To cut a long story short the results were my first album "live from the living room" in 2006. In 2008 I signed to the German label Tonetoaster and returned to the studio. My second album "the rising tide" will be released in spring 2009.
I hope anyone who listens to these recordings will get something from them for their trouble. That's what I really think folk music is: sharing. Sharing thoughts, feelings, anger, love, life, death and everything in between. Yeah, I like the sound of that! So that suits me fine.
