Gorespawn was formed out of the ashes of the Buttermaids. After a few line up changes, I came in the band and played guitar for them. Soon after, Byron joined to play bass and the line-up was complete. We started off playing covers and a few parties. We soon decided it was time to write our own material and eventually some of the best death metal tracks you'll ever hear.
Around 2001, we recorded a 3 song demo that contained the tracks Forgotten Shame, Amoral War, and the much forgotten Blinding Hate. The quality was shit but what can you do. We threw a couple of these out at some of our next couple of gigs. Kai decided to take up recording duties and we soon began to work on our next demo. The recordings were done in our practice space(Kai's basement) so we felt no pressure on the completion. The 4 tracks that were churned out were, Bleed Between the Scars, If not God, Jagged Edge of Insanity, and the Awakening. We started to hit our stride with these songs and tried to give different aspects of metal.
With a new demo in hand, we were tired of playing the same shitty gigs all the time so eventually Matt decided to work with several booking agents. In comes 2002, now the gigs start to come. We did somewhat of a mini-tour with LOW TWELVE , Figure Hate, and Rellic. Then we finally got asked to open up for Arch Enemy and Hate Eternal.
With the gig in our foresight, we practiced our asses off and decided to add another song to the list , since we had only about 20 mins to play, we wrote Oblivious Eternity for the show. The show was awesome, we could'nt fucking believe that we were sharing the stage with Eric Rutan and the gang. The success of this show had the band on a high and we continued to play shows and write more killer material.
Fast forward to 2002, we are asked once again to do an opening slot for a really fucking killer metal package. Kataklysm, Dying Fetus, Hate Eternal, and Nile. Rehearsals were insane for this show and we unfortunally ran into a snag at the time. Our bassist, Byron, got involved in a car accident and we had to find a replacement for the show. We got Brandon from Rellic to fill in and he did an fantastic job. The show was great, we made over hundred demos and passed them out. We got a very good response and this was definitely one of the highlights of the bands and my life.
Unfortunately, all good things have to come to an end. Things started to fizzle out in the fall of 2002 and we were then given the news of Byron's departure from the band. It really sucked because he brought so much energy. Then Matt became a parent so his time was limited. There was just Joe, Kai and me to keep it going. During the early part of 2003, we worked on a new demo, updating some of the older songs while adding a few more. However, this was not enough! Gorespawn did not just end, but rather faded.
During July 4th 2005, we reunited and played a show for Feizapolloza in Virgil, Il. We had Matt's little brother fill in on the bass and the show was great. We sounded fresh and inspired. It was not meant to be, nothing happened.
I hope to work with Kai to bring some of our latter recording to the table and hopefully you'll enjoy them as much as we do. Thanks to all of my bandmates, fans, friends and family for supporting us and being there. Also, not to forget about Greg Gopon for being the best roadie/manager possible.
