So, on June 20th, forty cops swooped down on the Greenpeace Japan offices to arrest the Greenpeace activists instead of the real criminals. <p> People from all around the world have stepped up to take extraordinary action against this injustice. Now another hero steps up to do what must be done. <p> A global storm has followed: hundreds of thousand of supporters have written to the Japanese government. Vigils and demonstrations have been held outside Japanese embassies worldwide. Mr. Splashy Pants and thousands of more people a day are being inspired to take action! <p> But you must be asking, who is this Mister Splashy Pants dude? In the real world, he's a humpback whale we tracked with a satellite tag heading from the Solomon Islands toward the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary -- that safe haven in which the Japanese government kills around 1,000 whales every year for "scientific research." He was named in an online competition in which his share of the 100,000 votes clobbered all rivals. <p> At the time, Japanese whalers were heading toward the Southern Ocean planning to add humpbacks to the whale species they kill every year. Public pressure from whale supporters worldwide brought diplomatic protest to bear, however, and the Japanese backed down on plans to kill humpbacks -- for now, anyway. (They still kill minke and fin whales, but our direct non-violent actions helped ensure they killed fewer of them this year.) <p> Whale activists like yourself, Junichi and Toru saved Mister Splashy Pants. So he reckoned it was time to return the favor. Posing as movers, activists entered the office with moving boxes full of recycled toilet and tissue paper and urged the staff to sign a document calling on the company to stop destroying one of North America’s wildest forests to produce disposable products. <p> The event is the latest step in an international campaign to force Kimberly-Clark to stop purchasing pulp for its disposable products, including Kleenex, from destructive logging operations in Canada’s Boreal Forest. <p> <center><a href="http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vbWVtYmVycy5ncmVlbnBlYWNlLm9yZy9hY3Rpb24vc3RhcnQvMTU0Lz8mcmVmX3NvdXJjZT1teXNwY19rY19GcmFua2xpbg==">Take Action: Stand With the Activists and Tell Kleenex to Stop Destroying Forests</a> <p><p> <a href="http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vbWVtYmVycy5ncmVlbnBlYWNlLm9yZy9hY3Rpb24vc3RhcnQvMTU0Lz8mcmVmX3NvdXJjZT1teXNwY19rY19GcmFua2xpbg=="><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3108/2624719525_199f6ea9b9.jpg" /></a></center> <p> “Greenpeace is asking Kimberly-Clark to move up to a higher standard of forest protection as they move into a new office,” said Greenpeace activist Basil Tsimoyianis. “Greenpeace will continue to directly communicate with Kimberly-Clark at events like this until the company stops using endangered forests such as the Boreal to make disposable products like tissue paper.” <p> Kimberly-Clark is the largest tissue product company in the world. It manufactures the popular Kleenex, Scott and Cottonelle brands of toilet paper and facial tissue. Kimberly-Clark produces millions of tons of tissue products annually and generates net sales of $18.3 billion. <p> Basil, a Greenpeace volunteer who ran a local <a href="http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vd3d3LmtsZWVyY3V0Lm5ldA==">Kleercut Campaign,</a> continued, “KC is one of the top tissue manufacturers, they cut down virgin forests, and miscommunicate their environmental practices to consumers. I wanted to open a dialogue with them. Also, this office is new and they are expanding their company; they can afford to expand into sustainable forestry.” <p> “It went real smooth. We pulled up to the new office and started pulling out boxes, we looked like really legit delivery folks. The door was locked but someone came and let us move the boxes inside. We all moved in handing out cloth sacks filled with tree saplings and flyers to employees that read ‘Kimberly-Clark can do better.’ The KC folks were really confused so three activists began a lockdown and the group revealed that we were Greenpeace. A lot of folks came out of their offices and engaged the activists much more than we expected. But then the cops were called and everyone but the three activists on lockdown and the videographer left. Those 4 were arrested and we’re currently waiting for their release.” <p> But we need your help! Kimberly-Clark’s contributes to the destruction of ancient forests and has been unwilling to improve its practices, so Greenpeace is stepping up the pressure to tell them that they must change their production process and use recycled content. Greenpeace activists soon arrived alongside the creature in one of the organization’s iconic inflatable boats holding a banner proclaiming: “Canon Can Save Whales.” <p><p> Greenpeace delivered the whale tail prop to call attention to the photography giant’s unwillingness to oppose Japan’s whale hunt, which has been widely condemned by the international community and rejected by the International Whaling Commission (IWC). Canon’s global headquarters is based in Japan and the CEO of the company’s Japan division also heads the Japanese Business Federation, which courts substantial influence with the country’s prime minister and government. But for years there has been scientific consensus that the hunt offers no meaningful contribution to whale research as well as international public outrage against the needless brutality the program inflicts on whales. Since the program began in 1987, it has not produced any peer-reviewed papers and the IWC has repeatedly rejected the scientific justification for the hunt. <p><p> Greenpeace is urging Canon to make the following statement: "Canon is committed to building a better world for future generations, and does not support the hunting of endangered or threatened species with anything other than a camera. Canon believes the lethal whaling research program in the Southern Ocean should be ended, and replaced with a non-lethal research program." <p><p> Canon says on its website that it wants to "hand over a beautiful earth for future generations."
