Bio
This is me : GQ aka Nothin Pretty, your favorite Hip Hop Puerto Rican. I originally hail from the Boogie Down Bronx, NY and I was born at the Albert Einstein Hospital September 12, 1979. My current place of residence is Allentown, P.A. where I am also a proud graduate of William Allen High School (Shout out peeps!) My Mother decided to leave after living on Hull Ave and Gun Hill Road for about 12 years. Hull Ave used to be a descent neighborhood but as times change. It seemed that the newer people who moved in and brought the crime with them. After all the drugs and the shoot outs invaded the block we had to go. My Mom wasn't having it and made plans to move to Allentown, P.A., where my older sister currently lived. I left NY with my Mom and my older Brother, my younger brother from my Dads side stayed back in the Bronx my other older Brother lived in Texas. From as far back as I can remember I fell in love with the fact that there is no limit to music, its everywhere. No matter where I was or what I was doing I could think about music. Just walking to school I could put my head phones on, ignore the world and walk to my favorite Hip Hop theme songs or instrumentals, that made my walks to school a journey depending on what I was listening to. If I were in class I would just zone off somewhere else and hear a beat in my head and completely ignore what ever was being taught that day and just start writing a verse. As I grew up I saw a lot in my life and lost a lot of good people that were dear to me. I Always had my mom by my side no matter how bad I did in school or in the streets all through out my life my mom has always been their for me. If it wasn't for my mother I'm not really sure where I would be right now. My Mom was a proud nurse at one of the most well known hospitals in the Bronx, and she worked very hard to make sure I got a good education and had the best of everything, sometimes she couldn't do it but we made it through, but for the most part my Mother always provided no matter what, and I have always been proud of her. When I was about 10 years old I just got off the bus coming from camp and I was standing in front of the deli on Gun Hill Rd and Hull Ave in the Bronx. My friends and me saw a long car like a Cadillac whipping around the corner tires screeching. A hand came out the window and through something into the store, I don't know how they did it cause they got it right in the store and the car was moving fast. So what they actually threw in there was a grenade. This Dominican brother name Oliver who used to hold the store down ran out with most of his fingers gone on the one hand, I think he tried to throw the grenade out. Oliver ran in the middle in the street and traffic stopped on all four streets on a real busy street like Gun Hill Rd was not a good thing. There was blood everywhere in the middle of the street and he was missing his fingers. No kid should ever see something like that at that age. It was around this same time that my best friend was put in a coma and died. He fell down an unsecured construction site and hit his head on the tooth of a bulldozer. That moment definitely changed me forever. Just a few years later the only grandfather that I ever met which was my moms father passed away. My father had some ups and downs also with doing some time in Jail, but getting back on track while still going through the ups and down of life he always tried to be there for me and he cared and loved for me very much. I lived with my father for a year but I couldn't understand life so all I did was cut school, hang out and make mix tapes. I wasn't feeling the education and I just couldn't adjust to it so I just didn't go. I ended up getting sent to Valhalla Correctional Facility in Westchester County N.Y for some trouble which also got me kicked out of my pops crib. A year after I got back home and I got a phone call from a friend out in the Bronx. My jaw dropped when he told me my father had shot his girlfriend, a male friend, a female friend, and then himself in Park Chester Apartments. That was March 8th, 1997 approximately 3 days after his 50th birthday. When I was 15 I started freestyling and getting into the whole music thing. My boys, who were my right hand mans, had been rapping since they were younger. They told me I was a natural and that I should keep freestyling. You know, start writing and making music with them. I did start feeling comfortable and the freestyling became easier for me. In fact I enjoyed it so much it ended up being the only thing I did. I got down with a crew called Lock Jaw Stylez started by a brother named DJ Meltdown who took me in as fam and introduced me to being in the studio, our logo was a pit bull with a microphone in its mouth, it was a pretty dope logo. We had t-shirts and stickers that we would go around Allentown rocking our shirts and putting stickers on buses and street signs and anywhere to get our brand out there. The whole Lehigh Valley knew about Lock Jaw and we were a household name. We had a local Hip Hop store called the Underground Set that gave me access to all the mixtapes and gear I needed. DJs used to get on the turntables and we would freestyle. Just being around other artists and peers and being around the scene and living the culture I always knew I wanted to be involved in the music industry. I have put in work at various Italian, seafood restaurants, and sports bars as a cook, and then later on dealt with restaurant management for a few years till I decided to pursue music fulltime. I always wanted to go to a culinary school and pursue being a full time Chef or High-end restaurant manager, but with the ups and downs of life and being a father to two beautiful daughters I didn't get around to it. My music influences growing up are artists such as Nas, Rakim, Kool G Rap, Wu-Tang Clan, Blackmoon, Eminem, Micheal Jackson, The Doors, Big Punisher, Krs 1, LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, Ras Kass, Method Man, The Jungle Brothers, Tribe Called Quest, Red Man, Black Thought, Metallica, James Brown and many more fueled my fire and influenced me to become an artist. They got me interested in the art of rhyme and I no longer wanted to just be a listener, I wanted to be a part of it. I get all my influences from The World. The world is filled with a lot of interesting things and I watch the world and listen to it cause its always saying something right and something wrong. I look at the good, the bad, and the ugly cause its filled with it. Like our corrupt government that feeds us lies and continues to dumb down the nation by only teaching our kids what they want them to know. Then they try to feed us adults the same lies they fed our parents, promising that one day our lives will be much easier and this world will be a better place for everyone to live in. The internet has become the great equalizer in the way that anyone can find the truth on their own. We are fighting back but before it gets better its only going to get worse. I will continue to express my feelings and painting The Mural of the Worlds Madness. The World also has a lot of beautiful things in it to appreciate like family, friends, loyalty, and appreciation for others, I like to take the personal things in my life that influence me and share it with the world in hopes I can inspire others through my visions. Fortunately, I can say that I have been blessed to meet and tour with people that were heavy influences in my music career. I had the chance to meet Method Man of the Wu-Tang clan at a video shoot for an artist I met while on tour named Hannibal the Great aka Hanz on. I also had the honor to go on an over 20 city tour in the US with Capadonna also of the Wu-Tang Clan, and then went on to do a song together along with my partner and close friend King Magnetic of Army of the Pharaohs for Magnetic's street mix tape series Everything's A Gamble Part 3. King Magnetic and I knew each other since back in high school days, we went to different high schools but he would cut school and pick me up all the time. We were also in a super group together made up of some of the most raw and talented artist coming out of the Lehigh Valley area of P.A. As we both had kids and things changed we went on our own paths for a minute to take care of our families and pursue our music careers. There was a certain time in my life where my career was at a stand still and I wasn't doing much but making mixtapes and selling them locally. Magnetic was looking for a partner to go on tour with him. As tours that he was booking were coming up, he also offered to executive produce my new project. I was watching Mags success and thought to myself why wouldn't I place my career in his hands, I got nothing to lose. Since me and Mag have started working together I have been to Europe Twice, 4 tours, 10 countries and 40 states and still going. Throughout the years I have dropped several mixtapes of my own, such as The Beginning of the End, A Tale of 2 cities, and my most recent project Circus After Sundown which was released on ITunes on January 3rd, 2012. I have also been featured on various artists' projects throughout the world such as, A New York Minute by DJ Low Cut from France, and Viktor Ax's The Lab where you can hear me with King Magnetic and Bizarre from Eminem's platinum group D12. You can also find me on King Magnetic EAG 3 where you can here collaborations from me with artist such as, Cappadonna of Wu-Tang, Blacastan from Apathy's group Demigodz, and from the legendary Wake Up Show Dj Revolution. Also look out for collaborations with underground heavy weights Ras Kass and Celph tit. I'm currently working on my new mixtape series featuring King Magnetic, Rustee Juxx and many more. I have been on a whole bunch of tours. Some are listed here : Your Favorite Emcee Tour for Reef the Lost Cauze's Album with production team The Snowgoons from Germany. The tour featured Reef The Lost Cauze,King Magnetic, and Ed OG from Boston's well known old school group Ed OG and Da Bulldogs. The Black Cloud Tour for Block McCloud's Four Walls album with DJ Wax Work. The tour featured King Magnetic and Block McCloud from The Army of the Pharaohs, and Cappadonna of the world famous Wu-Tang Clan. 2 Europe Tours, featuring shows with Jedi Mind Tricks and The Gza from Wu-Tang Clan. I feel like people should care about what I spit because what I do is not your average, on the radio, pop kind of Hip Hop. I like to make good classic Hip Hop music where its still about the lyrics. All the major labels push now is ignorance, sex, and money, but that's not what music is about. Its a real good time to be an independent artist to tell you the truth. There is so much more in the world to talk about then just popping bottles in the club and who has the most money, and I don't want that fed to my kids. Skinny jeans to their knees and dress more colorful then ever is what the masses think is cool and it's the medias fault for not only pushing that on the radio and TV but letting people believe it. People should care about my music cause I'm always going to teach you the ups and downs of life, and speak about currents events that affect everybody, everyday. Lets not forget to the more grown and old school Hip Hop heads who like to hear emcees being creative with word play and just blacking out to a crazy beat.. Yeah I do that to, ha ha. I speak about personal things in my life in hopes to get somebody else through a tough time, I want the people to relate to me and be inspired to do better in life…. That's one of my main goals. When I'm not making music I like to just chill out with my kids and my family. I enjoy the short time I have with them. We take trips to the lake, the park, the movies, we play video games and do all the things a family does. I'm a big Law and Order fan and I been getting hooked on Tru TV, watching shows like Storage Wars and Worlds Worst Tenants lol. I would like to get into some of type of volunteer work in the future, anything helping kids and the homeless or less fortunate. My favorite lyric is : I don't wanna fight / I rather do what's right / a boy needs a father that's the most important part of his life… Big Punisher off his Capital Punishment album called Punish Me featuring Miss Jones. My Favorite Hip Hop verse of all time is Cappadonna verse on Winter Warz and my favorite Hip Hop Songs are: Main Source – I'm looking out the front door. De La Soul – Ego Trippin Notorious BIG – Sky is the Limit Nas – Halftime Music has always been my escape from life's ups and downs. The one thing I always loved about music is there is always a song that can go to your mood and music can also change your mood, that's one thing about music I fell in love with. The current state of the industry could improve and it seems like the only people to get heard on a mainstream level, heard on national radio, and seen on major television networks are the artists who talk about money, cars, sex and etc. It makes it hard for artist like me who talk about real life situations and positive messages of bettering ourselves as people and not falling for the government garbage they feed us. I have been fortunate enough to have major Accomplishments and there are artists I have worked with or performed with and memorable venues like : Krs 1, Mad Lion, Xzibit, Big Punisher, Tony Sunshine, Mobb Deep, Terror Squad, Onyx, The Grand Agent, Jedi Mind Tricks, AOTP, Outerspace, Peedi Crack, Nems, Memphis Bleek, Freeway, Cappadonna, Ed Og, E Ness, Block McCloud, Beanie Sigel, Iron Solomon, Juelz Santana, Poison Pen, RA The Rugged Man, Ras Kass, Sean Price, Keith Murray, King Magnetic, Danny Diablo, Blacastan, Main Flow, Adlib, The Gza, Godilla, DJ Revolution and Necro. I have also won and placed in various battles and events in the Tri State Area such as : The Philly Blaze Battle, End Of The Week MC Challenge, and been 2 Time Champion in Allentown P.A.'s very own local Freestyle Friday Competition. Notable Venues The TLA in Philadelphia, P.A Hard Rock Cafe in New York, N.Y The Fillmore New York, N.Y Thanks for reading and before you go please check out the rest of the site and look out for my upcoming projects on this site as well as visit me on facebook, myspace, itunes and more! -
