Grace Before Meals are a new-ish band who had their debut show in 2008 at The Cad Factory in Sydney supporting Mick Turner (The Dirty Three) and Jeffrey Wegner (The Laughing Clowns).
The band exist as a four or five piece feauturing piano, xylophone, percussion, clarinet, voice, viola, bass guitar, trumpet and all manner of found things.
They combine their love for soft, creepy, beautiful music, with maddened carnival stomps.
Listen to all their songs, the next is often different from the last.
Grace Before Meals are nearing the release of their debut Double EP. Yes that's right a double EP. Two flavours for the price of one.
Ep 1 will feature songs, in their more traditional form. You can hear three of these above on MySpace "Runway Approach Lights", "Dear Miss Creeding" and "Stop Stop"
Ep 2 will feature a travelogue of vast sounds, jams and experiments conducted throughout Australia from remote outback locations, to tropical beachsides and snarling city environments. You can hear samples of these above, "Solo Clarinet" an improvised clarinet recording at Carriageworks, Sydneys newest comtemporary arts venue, and also "Fence", a recording made in the remote Australian outback.
Between mid April and Mid July 2009, Grace Before Meals undertook a world tour that saw them play in Scotland, 6 shows in Holland including at a 3 day festival at Ruiggord, Copenhagen, Berlin including a show with Bob Rutman collaborator with the likes of Wim Wenders and Einsturzende Neubauten, Italy including a performance at the 5 day Itinerario Festival of Music, Art, Landscape, Performance and Architecture at the
Malatesta Fortress, a castle built in 1330.
Grace Beofre Meals ended this tour with extensive travel throughout China playing in a variety of cities and appearing as a feature story on Chinese Television News.
August saw them return to Australia for a Double Ep launch at The Vanguard in Sydney, a launch/tour of Melbourne and performances at The Strand Ephemera festival in Townsville.
In Sydney, the members of Grace Before Meals run a warehouse venue/exhibition space called The Cad Factory www.cadfactory.com.au which had just received Australia Council funding to host a 10 month program of music/art events.
They are also establishing a rural artist residency program in Narrandera NSW.
