About me:

A worldwide Association of BJJ Schools

The Gracie Barra Association is a global organization formed by more than 200 BJJ schools that hold the mission of training body, mind and spirit through the highest level of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction as a means for individual development and the strengthening of the family spirit, going beyond the competitive realm. At Gracie Barra, the principle of efficiency, the core of BJJ, is not restricted to a general principle behind the practice of self defense techniques, but serves as a moral beacon that guides the behavior of each and every Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner - instructors, and their students.

Since the main Gracie Barra School was founded back in 1983, Gracie Barra has been in constant growth. Under the leadership of Master Carlos Gracie Jr., GB has evolved from one small school at the suburb of Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, to more then two hundred schools all around the globe, forming a community of thousands of individuals in the five continents.

This growth and change, however, have not undermined our core values that lay at the foundation of our success: Brotherhood: Above all, Gracie Barra is a family. Its members are proud of being a key part of a successful team that has being able to create something much bigger than themselves.

Cooperation: Inside a Gracie Barra BJJ School Dojo, there are no opponents. There are only training partners - "Uke") - engaged in a cooperative learning experience aimed to make each other better not only as BJJ practitioners but as human beings.

Discipline: To excel on any endeavor, discipline is essential. It couldn't be different with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At Gracie Barra BJJ Schools the discipline of training and the willingness to sacrifice for higher achievements is reinforced in and outside the Dojo. Respect: Inside Gracie Barra all people must act with warmth and equality toward one another, regardless of differences in race, creed, nationality, etc. Respect for the hierarchy of the ranks is also very strong and the authority of a Black Belt is truly recognized.

If you identify with the values that we live by and have plans to start a BJJ School or Program, or are already part of the BJJ community, you can apply to become a Gracie Barra school.

Gracie Barra History

At the heart of the Gracie Barra Family's extraordinary success over the years is our strong philosophy and mission as a group, a foundation which our masters laid many years ago, but is constantly made stronger by all of the great people involved in our community. Jiu-Jitsu is a beautiful art, and we have a vision of how it should be taught, as well as how our community should work together for common, powerful, and positive goals. Carlos Gracie Jr. History

"I am Carlos Gracie Jr., the founder of the Gracie Barra academy, located in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I want to share a few words about the early days of the school and how it was created. The history of Gracie Barra is directly related to my life, and as a result, the story of the school is also the story of my life, both past, present, and future." Jiu Jitsu History

Some historians of jiu jitsu say that the origins of "the gentle art" can be traced back to India, and was practiced by Buddhist Monks. Concerned with self-defense, these monks created techniques based upon principles of balance and leverage, and a system of manipulating the body in a manner where one could avoid relying upon strength or weapons. In the last days of the 19th century, some jiu jitsu masters emigrated from Japan to other continents, teaching the martial arts, as well as competing in fights and competitions.
