About me:
Born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, Graham Nunn (mis)spent his childhood growing up in Mt. Gravatt East, gathering the words for a lifetime of poems. He was the organiser of the New and Selected Readings in 2001 and co-founded legendary Brisbane spoken word event SpeedPoets (www.speedpoets.org) in 2002. In 2003, his first collection of haiku, ‘A Zen Firecracker’ was published. This publication was well received by the critics and as a result Nunn was invited to run a series of workshops on the art of haiku at the inaugural Bali Readers and Writers Festival in Ubud (2004) and The Byron Bay Writers Festival (2005). In 2004, he was invited to be the Artistic Director of The Queensland Poetry Festival (www.queenslandpoetryfestival.com). In the same year he released his first full-length collection of poetry ‘Share the Tragedy’. 2005 saw the release of two new collections, an experimental chapbook co-written with Mandy Beaumont ‘To the one who comes at dawn …’ and ‘Measuring the Depth’ a collection of haibun and haiku. 2007 was also a busy year, co-founding Queensland's newest independent publishing house of poetry, spoken word and lyrics - Small Change Press and releasing his latest collection of poetry, Ruined Man. Nunn’s poetry is taut and concise. His work has been described as assured, achieved and ambitious.

ROCK AGAINST HUMOUR

@ Clarence Corner Hotel
Friday March 27

w/ Vaginabillies
The Old Order
The Omars
Handbag
& Compere Alex Oliver (4ZZZ Friday Drivetime)

After the huge success of ROCK AGAINST CHICKS last year, Brother Man Dude has decided to put together the next ‘ROCK AGAINST…’ event while the momentum is on his side. Since the ‘ROCK AGAINST…’ series is really starting to get a name for itself, he has decided it’s time to really make a statement.

ROCK AGAINST CHICKS attracted a lot of attention because of its sensational and provocative undertones. Was it misogynistic? Was it sexually exploitative? It certainly attracted a crowd.

For this next event, Brother Man Dude is happy to ride that wave of publicity. But Rock Against Humour is different in a very significant way: It does not resort to cheap laughs and attention seeking tactics. This is the real thing. No joke.

ROCK AGAINST HUMOUR brings together bands and performers that put passion before professionalism. This does not mean they don’t mean business. Certainly they know how to have a laugh. After all when you’re dealing with weighty subject matter, man, you gotta break the tension somehow.

The evening will be compered by 4ZZZ personality Alex Oliver of Friday Night Drive fame. He will keep the audience on their toes and on task. It’s High Art; it’s challenging but it can be rewarding. So pay attention.

This is not just a night for drinking, partying and escapism.

Remember, it’s not a joke. Get serious.

Choose a position. Make a stand. Rock Against Humour.

Postman turned philosopher, the wonderful Gaston Bachelard:

A little share until you get your mitts on a copy of The Poetics of Space

“Poetry is one of the destinies of speech… One would say that the poetic image, in its newness, opens a future to language. The words of the world want to make sentences”.

gaston bachelard Pictures, Images and Photos

“A corner that is ‘lived in’ tends to reject and restrain, even to hide, life. The corner becomes a negation of the universe. In one’s corner one does not talk to oneself. When we recall the others that we have spent in our corners we remember above all silence, the silence of our thoughts.”

“consciousness of being at peace in one’s corner produces a sense of immobility, and this, in turn, radiates immobility. An imaginary room rises up around our bodies, which think that they are well hidden when we take refuge in a corner.”

"Words ... are little houses, each with its cellar and garret. Common sense lives on the ground floor, always ready to engage in ‘foreign commerce’ on the same level as the others, as the passers-by, who are never dreamers. To go upstairs in the word house is to withdraw step by step; while to go down to the cellar is to dream, it is losing oneself in the distant corridors of an obscure etymology, looking for treasures that cannot be found in words. To mount and descend in the words themselves—this is a poet’s life. To mount too high or descend too low is allowed in the case of poets, who bring earth and sky together." ~The Poetics of Space"

ROCK AGAINST CHICKS

@ Clarence Corner Hotel
Saturday October 25th

w/ Girl with Cake
The Old Order
Legions of Mary
Flying Squad.

Chick bands are the next phenomenon to be under the spotlight in the ongoing “Rock Against…’ series promoted and presented by Brother Man Dude from The Old Order.

There’s a lot of excellent all girl bands ‘round at the moment and something must be done; things are getting out of hand. 2 of the best are indie popsters Girl with Cake and grunge rockers Legions of Mary. Classic rockers The Old Order and garage rockers Flying Squad who both happen to be all male are feeling threatened so they are asserting their relevance and staging a showdown.

The idea of the ‘Rock Against…’ series is that for each event a style of music is featured as much as a protest against the genre as a celebration of it. So far Garage, Folk, Country, Roots and Indie bands have been featured.

Its about bringing together bands and performers that may not normally be on the same bill to blur the lines and emphasise similarities as well as differences. The Rock bands are chosen on the grounds that they may have more to do with bands of the particular style or scene featured than is immediately obvious and vice-versa. Poetry, Hip-Hop and Humour are some of the styles to come.

So what are we gonna learn about the bands on the bill of Rock Against Chicks? Will gender stereotypes be subverted? Will sexual identities be shattered? Or will it just be a case of good ol’ fashioned knee-slapping cross-dressing hi-jinx and cheap laughs?

Choose a position. Make a stand. Rock Against Chicks.
