Music is so huge, and so much bigger than us. It's the eternal question...do we manipulate the music, or vice versa?
How does one even begin to try and figure out what's influenced their music?
Johnny Winter; Glenn Miller; Mozart; Beethoven; Crosby, Stills & Nash; Jurassic 5; Led Zepplin; Stevie Wonder; Stevie Ray Vaughn; Heart (yeah, I said Heart); Yes; Mars Volta; Dilated Peoples; De La Soul; A Tribe Called Quest; Soundgarden; Jimi Hendrix; Tab Benoit; John Mayer; Rush; Thelonius Monk; Dave Brubeck; Nickel Creek; Steely Dan; Ray Charles; James Taylor; Susan Tedeschi; Robert Johnson...etc.
The fact of the matter is that this list could go on forever. Just making this list helps me see what an adventure listening to any one of these influences can be. Music is such an amazing thing any way you cut it. It's clearly one of the things in this world for which I'm most thankful.
Sounds Like
Here's another list that never ends...
I've been told I sound like so many people it's ridiculous.
The most prominent aspects of my music are those of: R&B, Blues, Folk and Funk. That may not be entirely accurate, but when a person's influences are so diverse, his/her musical projection can be quite diverse as well.
I've been playing music for a long time. It's clearly one of the most amazing things in this world. I don't know how "good" my music is per se, but I do know that I just write songs that I like to play. Music is, indeed, expression of self, which is another way it serves me. I'm going to keep singing and playing as long as the Good Lord will let me continue doing so, because it's something I very much love. My only hope is to see that somebody else either bounces with me, relates with me, or just enjoys what I've done in some way. I'd love to see that somebody is smiling because they've listened to one of my songs. May they let you know that you're not alone, that it's okay to be who you are, it's okay to be imperfect, but most of all, that it's okay to be happy.
