Pero ya te debes estar preguntando, ¿Qué es el candombe? El Candombe es un ritmo proveniente de Africa que ha sido parte importante de la cultura uruguaya por más de doscientos años. Uruguay con una población de aproximadamente 3.2 millones de habitantes, es un pequeño país ubicado en Sudamérica, que tiene como países limítrofes a sus dos grandes vecinos Brasil (162 millones) al este y Argentina (34 millones) al oeste. Este ritmo llegó a Uruguay desde Africa gracias a los negros esclavos, y aún palpita en las calles de la capital. Domingos en las noches, los tambores del Barrio Sur se reúnen a la luz del fuego en una intersección del histórico barrio de los negros, en una tranquila esquina de Sudamérica. Las llamas bailan en la poderosa luz de una fogata que se enciende para calentar las lonjas de los tambores. Filas de tamborileros desfilan por la calle en una confusión de músculo, sudor y sonido, llenando la noche con un ritmo proveniente de África, conocido como Candombe. El ritual de la esquina de la calle es parte del capítulo olvidado de la diáspora africana. Los tambores cuentan la historia del profundo impacto que la cultura africana ha tenido en Uruguay y en otros lugares de América Latina. By now you must be wondering, What is Candombe? Candombe (can-dome-bey) is an African derived rhythm that has been an important part of Uruguayan culture for over two hundred years. Uruguay, with a population of approximately 3.2 million, is a small country located in South America, bordered by its two massive neighbors, Brazil (162 million) to the East, and Argentina (34 million) to the West. This rhythm traveled to Uruguay from Africa with black slaves, and is still going strong in the streets of Uruguay's capital city, Montevideo. On Sunday nights, the drummers of Barrio Sur assemble by firelight at an intersection in the historic black neighborhood in a tranquil corner of South America. Isla de Flores is the main street that joins Ansina and Cuareim, candombe's two main social groups. For over a century spontaneous cuerdas have paraded on this street, and continue to do so today. Isle de Flores is also known by its second name, Carlos Gardel. Flames dance in a gutter bonfire lighted to tone the hides of the drums. Rows of drummers pound down the street in a blur of muscle, sweat and sound, filling the night with an African-derived rhythm known as candombe. The street-corner ritual is part of a neglected chapter of the African diaspora. The drums tell a story of the profound impact that African culture has had in Uruguay and elsewhere in Latin America.
