From Harper’s Ferry and the Middle East in Boston to The Living Room in Providence to The Knitting Factory in New York, Grand Army have blown over crowds with their heart-pounding, feet-stomping, almost orgasmic live performances. After three years on the road, the band released their first album, Toys for Chaos, in April and are headed into the studio for round 2 in August.
Born out of the ashes of the equally as popular Oneiris, Grand Army has developed a sound that is as mysterious and new as it is familiar and most importantly, enjoyable. Although the band is rooted in dance music, they manage to pour rock, jazz, funk and electro-pop into their already steamin’ booty shakin’ stew they call simply, their music.
On Toys for Chaos we find lead singer alicia racine, keyboardist jude kingston, bassist mike jupin and drummer adam colucci as at ease in the studio as they are on stage thanks in large part to master producers Overclock Inc. and Rob Pemberton. The album moves seamlessly from middle-eastern tinged epics to straight rock anthems to bass driven funk workouts all while sounding uniquely the band’s own. Anyone who has ever played music knows that this is extremely difficult to accomplish, while the average listener, upon hearing the album would simply say, “this album kicks ass.”
Mark my words good people; you want to get behind Grand Army right now. While Toys for Chaos is a solid album song after song, the next album has the potential to be monumental. Grand Army is a band destined for great things so put your dancing shoes on sucka!
