Grand National Championships on WMNF Tampa 88.5 FM's Blurbs
About me:
Grand National Championships is hosted by Alastair Fraser Saint Hill & Jerrad James McLeod. It consists mainly of musical selections from modern artists & composers with a touch of classic R&B and garage rock thrown in for good measure. We try to spend some time discussing music as well as spouting off random gibberish.

Grand National Championships was honored with WMNF's Overnight Programmer(s) of the Year award for 2005 and 2007.

You can listen to our latest show right here, at your leisure. The ideal times to listen seem to be whilst folding laundry, doing homework, and watching television (with the TV volume all the way down, of course).

Also check out Our Website for detailed show information, playlists, pretty pictures, hot vids, local concert happenings, and cuss words.

Who I'd like to meet:
These collections, and more, available for download at GNC Records:

The Gleaming Amoebas(GNC001)

The Amoebas live and play their music in the heart of the city. You might not immediately guess that based on the sunny day countryside views afforded by their self-titled album. Every song coaxes a jerky sway if you catch yourself standing too close to the speakers. These guys have forged their chops playing marathon jams in dive bars, as musicians will do, but a smoky room will be the last thing on your mind when you hear the cathedral-sized melodies barked out through vocal cords and guitar strings alternatively. This is big sky music, caught echoing between the high windows downtown.

Alex St.Hill - The Last Gig(GNC002)

Alex St.Hill grew up in St.Vincent, a volcanic island in the Carribean. Raised in the islands and having settled in our fair city of St. Petersburg, Alex carries on the tradition of songwriters like Bob Dylan, Jesse Winchester, and John Prine. The strength of his songs doesn't come from raw power, but a patient confidence in simple melodic truths. The spare arrangements guide one's ear to listen closely to the placement, musically and spatially, of every note and every word.

The Satsukos(GNC005)

Mike, Lori, and Kyle's days as a band have, sadly, come to a close. They leave behind this document of their efforts over the 5 years they were active, and a few words: "2002-2007. Thanks to everyone who came out. We had a great time." It's not quite punk, not quite pop, not quite indie rock, and not quite enough to keep me from starting it again every time the last notes of 'Over and Over' fade away.

Incredible Crisis(GNC008)

Progressive Garage Rock is what the kids call it. Incredible Crisis seems to have a lack of patience for any single musical motif, a tendency to place songs at the breaking point of their singer's vocal range, and a compulsion to set tempos based on the limits of their drummer's stamina. Sometimes frantic and desperate, occasionally chilly and analytical, their songs are easily hummable but densely filled with ideas that reveal themselves over repeated listenings. The stuttering thump of this album calls to mind a marching drum corps knocking a punk rawk trio down a flight of stairs.

I was up late, I'd had a few beers. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

I can't put an umlaut in there--that key was broken from overuse.

Emerald Bar, this Friday night! Post Thanksgiving madness!

That's right. The No Loves know how old it gets hanging out with annoying relatives, even the ones we only see this time of year. Nothing cures this disorder better than a few stiff drinks made by Chrissy and a few sets of the infamous No Loves and their beligerant, obnoxious, shit-faced, butt-ass naked singer,....the crawlin' king snake,.......Jimbo No Love, Sr. This is also your last chance to see the talented Mr. Kevin K with an acoustic set before he ships off for a European tour. So when you've had your fill of turkey and pie, tell you aunt and uncle to kick rocks and don't let em' follow you to the Emerald.
