SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 08, 2007 "I have never heard a Robbie Fulks song I didn't like, but I had not had a chance to see him perform before his extraordinary set on the Black Swamp stage last night.
Backing Fulks was one of the best 3-piece bands you'll likely to hear, featuring the astonishingly tasty work of guitarist Grant Tye. Tye, playing a battle-worn Stratocaster, squeezed out rapid-fire chicken-pickin' licks, liquid steel guitar whines, and whammy bar quavers with the ease of a man who, one suspects, never puts the instrument down. He's the kind of player that makes me want to pile my gear up in the yard and have a bonfire.
Fulks and company are more fun and more musical than is probably legal in many Red States. Nashville needs Robbie Fulks far more than Fulks needs Nashville". (Uploaded by Bob Rhubart)

Here's a tune I wrote with Gary Yerkins, "Old Flame" with Robbie Fulks Band
Born in Dallas, Texas, grew up in Clinton, Mississippi.
I starting playing in clubs when I was sixteen and toured all over the south.
After spending time in Texas and Los Angeles, I landed in Chicago.
In my early 20's, I met Brad Nye and Klem Hayes and we formed 'Dick Holliday and The Bamboo Gang'....a funky, popular, R&B/Rock and Roll band......still kickin' it to this day.
As a sideman in many acts, I've traveled to Canada, Great Britain, Norway, Mexico and the Carribean... I've played Conan O'Brien, The Grand Ole Opry and every honky-tonk in between.
Highlights include:
*Having the honor of performing with Robbie Fulks on the Grand Ole Opry Stage
*Selling out The Great American Music Hall in San Fran with Sonja Dada
*Years of fun, amazing collaboration with my great friend, Jay O'Rourke
*Watching drunken Norwegians in chaps enjoy the music of Anna Fermin's Trigger Gospel
* Ripping it up on stages and in studios with monster vocalist Cathy Richardson
*Recording in Memphis' famed Ardent Studios with The Juleps
*Playing the Grand Opening of Millenium Park with the great Mavis Staples
*Selling out every notable venue in Chicago in the late 80's, early 90's with Dick Holliday
*Hearing legendary soul singer Otis Clay exclaim "THESE BOYS CAN PLAY!" while backing him at the Old Town School of Music
*Writing songs with talented music man Gary Yerkins
*Recording an old school duet "Life is so Peculiar" with Urge Overkill's Nash Kato
*Trading licks in a Nashville studio with legendary pedal steel player Lloyd Green
and telecaster master Red Volkaert.
...the list grows....and that's the way I like it!...being so lucky to play with such talented people still blows my mind.....
Some of the tunes available here are from my recent recording, "Overdub Motel", a project that I am working on with Jay O'Rourke...I am singing and writing with lots of my friends on this...hope ya'll like it! The other song is with Robbie Fulks and if you don't know who he is, you should....
