What is Grass It Up? The word "Grass" indicates the primary type of music we play. We are an acoustic-based trio that plays driving Bluegrass with the occasional Jazz, blues, celtic, rock or country tune. The word "It" refers to what is grassed up. We pursue the right mix of music for our audience, while serving our fix of bluegrass and any other genre that compells us. The word "Up" is refering to the style and energy that is used to express ourselves in live recordings and performances. David Jeffrey had a vision - each member of Grass It Up must play a vital role in the overall performance and outreach to fans - a unified sound for a collective audience. Where did these guys come from? The short answer is from all over the place. The theorectically correct answer is that they all came from the desire to perform like types of music to anyone interested in listening. Who do they sound like? Please enjoy a few songs... Thank you for visiting our myspace community, it's like the rippin' community of characters at our live shows, but different. When myspace starts selling whiskey however, I bet it will be the same.
You may or may not know, we are a simple trio of acoustic style, paying the utmost respect to traditional bluegrass while honoring and adapting bluegrass technique to other genres - just because its fun. Our shows consist of Grass It Up original music and some covers tunes that salute the best.
Grass It Up entertains a range of audiences with their eclectic and articulate blend of traditional bluegrass, while turning heads with colorful renditions of audience favorites.
Formed in 2005, the power-trio of David Jeffrey (mandolin/guitar/vocal), Shannon Carr (guitar/banjo/vocal) and Jon Bross (upright bass/vocal) have released (2) original full-length CDs and can be heard performing for Fortune 500 companies, luxury resorts and convention centers, mountain towns and festivals, acoustic societies and private events.
A range of influence is evident in their music and performance energy. “We’re playing to have fun and that means a dynamic repertoire for us, we find that engaging our audience at every performance is vital in building the energy we’re after.” stated bass player Jon Bross. Grass It Up performs every Wednesday in Colorado Springsat the Front Range Barbeque, a venue that has grown into a hub for bluegrass music in the city and a showcase for nationally touring bluegrass bands. Their musical adventures certainly don’t stop with an evening booking. “In our three years together, we’ve arranged and hosted a series of mountain music festivals near Divide Colorado as well as two destination music festivals titled Lavapalooza in Arenal, Costa Rica. We find inspiration in our friends and community, and are passionate about culture and travel - these events further unite our music and friends each year”.
Grass It Up has been featured throughout Coloradoin the print media, regional radio stations and bluegrass shows. They can be heard each Wednesday as the introduction music for the Steve Harris Bluegrass Show on KRCC-FM in Colorado Springs.
David Jeffrey goes with the flow, like a twig on the shoulders of a mighty stream. Unmistakably from a front porch in Alabama, David was born blue, playing with a range of Southern bands including Randomwood, Blue Hooptie Revival, JSU Jazz Band and is the lyrical force behind Grass It Up. When David isn't pickin', he works in local advertising as an account executive. David has been in Colorado for five years and is influenced by Del and Ronnie McCoury, Chris Thile, Sam Bush, David Grisman, Jeff Austin and Pearl Jam. David plays guitar and mandolin.
Shannon Carr was born and raised in Oxford, Alabama. Shannon and David began playing music together four years ago and their passion for performance has brought them together again in Colorado. Shannon’s first musical influences were the country and bluegrass sounds of his grandparents and uncles followed by the highly recognized sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn. He then woodshedded to jazz greats and bluegrass legends. Shannon adds the element of precision and fine tuned musicianship to Grass It Up. He helps push the band to achieve the highest level of arrangement and performance. Shannon plays guitar and banjo.
Jon Bross thinks that the only thing that would make Colorado perfect is better cheese and a few more walleye lakes. Hailing proudly from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jon spends his daytime hours in corporate marketing and his nightlife burning pent up energy. After gigs in several Blues, Disco and Funk bands, Jon decided to pursue his passion for the mountains by moving to Colorado in 1998. Being raised with a guitar in his hands, Jon enjoyed transitioning to upright bass upon meeting the Alabama boys. When he isn't grassin' it up, you'll find him atop Colorado's high peaks, rippin' down a mountain on broken skis or dry flying a cool mountain stream.
Grass It Up is an active member of the Colorado Springsbusiness community, performing often for chamber members and local businesses while assisting non-profit and benefit organizations such as Care & Share and Junior Achievement of Southern Colorado.
