The Grass Skirts is Houston’s Hawaiian band bringing the sounds of the ukulele and steel guitar that made Hawaii famous.
Headed by native Houstonians Mateo Rhodes and Christopher Daniello, The Grass Skirts combo was created out of a genuine love for Hawaiian music and the shortage of it in Houston. Mateo says, “If you go to the Waikiki area on the island of Oahu, you’ll hear music at most of the major hotels the way it was played back in the 30’s through the 50’s, or Hawaii’s Golden Age. This is the music we want to bring back because it’s what we mainlanders think of when we think of Hawaiian music.”
The Grass Skirts’ varied set list includes arrangements of tropical standards ("On the Beach at Waikiki", "Blue Hawaii", "Tiny Bubbles") as well as original compositions. The group is available for parties, luaus, and corporate functions as a small musical combo or accompanied by a hula dancer if prearranged. The band also performs periodically throughout the greater Houston area and lists appearances on their website at http://thegrassskirts.com
"Ticklin' The Strings" by Sweet Hollywaiians
Amazing Japanese hot string band playing 1920's, 30's, 40's style hawaiian, swing, calypso, blues, italian music and originals, featuring vintage instruments.3 songs with Robert Armstrong and Tony Marcus(from Robert Crumb and His Cheap Suit Serenaders)
"The Sweet Hollywaiians have probably the best feel for this 20's music of any string band working today. They manage the rare feat of sounding relaxed even when their playing is hot, are top notch musicians with tasteful arrangements and a full, rich, warm sound.Plus, they have a nice gamut of tunes, from King Nawahi to Giovanni Vicari to Bobby Leecan. See them live, if you can, for an unforgettable experience. If you can't, buy their Cds!" ~ Terry Zwigoff
on behalf of manutahi texas and myself, we would like to thank you guys for coming out and entertaining us with your great sounds at our fundraising event.
we as well as our guest really appreciates it. it was nice to meet your new member..i must say, she's a natural dancer too..:)
you guys take care and thanks again..see you soon.
you guys need to be playing the HPMA's next year for sure. glad to see so many gigs coming up. of some concern, word on the street says the ukelele player may be spending more time on his new side project, The Morrissey Fields, the world's only tribute band dedicated to Morrissey and the Magnetic Fields, often at the same time.
Hey thanks so much for listening, and being a friend....being friends is good...REAL good! All the best to you as well...Hope we get to meet "out there"! :o) Cindy
awesome show the other night and you got me hooked on musubi. I still think there is a Hawaiian Morrissey song to be had out there, and I'm working on a song to submit as well, but I warn you, I will have to take over lead vocals for this one!!!
