Books

I'm currently reading:

  • Head First Design Patterns
    Freeman & Freeman
If you want a good introduction to Patterns, this should be it. Easy to read and it helps give you a good understanding of patterns and why they are used. Unlike the more reference-oriented books.
  • The Art of SQL
    Stephane Faroult with Peter Robson
Applying Sun Tzu's The Art of War to database design. A 'unique' idea, and actually quite good.
  • Java Puzzlers
    Joshua Bloch & Neal Gafter
Makes you think about how the Java language works. Worth reading. Especially if you have an interview for a Java job coming up. ;)

I generally enjoy:

  • Iain (M. or no M.) Banks
  • Neil Gaiman
  • William Gibson
  • Jeff Noon
  • Bruce Sterling
  • Neal Stevenson
  • Oscar Wilde

About me:

A chap living in Stevenage and working in London. What more is there to say?

Okay, okay! I'll tell you more if you insist. There are smatterings of my life all over this page, so you'd work it out anyway. I spent my first nine years in Kingston Upon Hull, followed by four years in Paris, five years in Newcastle Under Lyme, three years in Sheffield, three more years in Newcastle Under Lyme, two years in Alton, Hampshire and as I write this I have now been living in Stevenage, Hertfordshire for the past five years.

Stevenage has the dubious honour of being the first 'new town'. I think means that they had a lot of ideas about how to create a town at the time, but they hadn't worked out which ones would work yet. Some such as the bike paths did work ... but a lot didn't.

I work in the smoke. Slap bang in the middle of the square mile. That's London's financial centre for those who don't know. I work for a bank, developing e-Business applications as they call them. Mostly that means I develop web applications to do foreign exchange, loans and deposits.

When I'm not working you're still likely to find me on a computer. Pootling around on the internet or coding away. I know ... all work, no play makes Steve a dull boy! But I do like to get out on a mountain bike. I tend to be the one organising long weekends of mountain biking for the guys at mtb-thrashers.com. Usually we head up to Coed y Brenin or one of the other trails in Wales, but we're working to do more adventurous trips to Scotland and the French Alps.

I have recently listened to...

Other places to find me...

To keep better track of what I'm up to, you should probably look at the gratiartis.org site. I now have WordPress set up so that I can write the odd blog or article. That's also where all the embarrassing photos are...

Who I'd like to meet:

Well ... any chums who track me down here.

I was also hoping to track down some artists from the world of industrial music, new and old. I'm keen to find out what new artists are out there and what the established ones are up to. Mischief I hope...

Apropos of the new interest in photography... what lenses are you using at the moment? I've just done a quick catalogue of my camera stuff and discovered I now have 9 canon fd lenses covering 24mm through to 300mm (600mm possible with a 2x teleconverter!). I think I need to stop buying now, although I'm watching a T90 on ebay (the last of Canon's manual focus cameras and know informally as 'the tank')

Happy Birthday Steve. Thanks for the photography handbook by the way - I have now discovered how my camera works (apparently it's an aperture priority auto-exposure, so all I need to do is set the aperture to get the right field of view and the camera works out the shutter speed to expose it properly). Yay! Going to go and have a look for a couple of lenses this week.

Howdo Steve. Not heard from you for a while so I thought I'd drop by and graffiti your site. I thought you (and probably Leanne as well) would like this. It's interesting and informative...

Hmmm, can;t figure out how to do all this html stuff to change my homepage colours. Yours is looking pretty good now (but then you are a programmer type). Wonder if I can get some plants in my page somewhere. BTW, good photos from Tobago. How goes the numberwang? Sorry I didn't take it all that serious ;-)
