currently seeking a rhythm and lead guitarist/singer. He/she must show fondness for sometimes heavy but always melodic and succinct "power pop", love the rough-around-the-edges sound of rock played through vintage guitars and amps, and have a "rig" of this kind at his/her disposal...no master volume knobs allowed.
The candidate should both love and understand the polished genius of the "Perfect Three Minute Pop Song" and recognize that equal measures of restraint, melodicism, predictability and sudden surprises in a tight little package is what great rock music is all about. There will be no 15-minute guitar solos, and no "jamming, brah". Songs are crafted mostly on your own time and brought to the table for further development. People between the ages of 25 and 45 will be considered.
He/she need also be a highly-competent vocalist with particular emphasis on the ability to easily harmonize with one or two other vocalists as the arrangements demand.
Schedule would demand 2-hour rehearsal once weekly to start, possibly ramping up to twice weekly. Gigging schedule to be determined but roughly once per-month either weekend or weekday gigs after rehearsals yield requisite tightness.
Hi Folks...thanks for stopping by. The songs that you're now listening to are my own.
Great Magnet Recording is the name of the band I'm currently putting together. The tunes you're hearing now are rough, unfinished recordings/mixes for the eponymous album project also in-progress.
This page is now my ground-zero "recruitment center" for a second guitar player that can handle lead guitar duties, rhythm and textural work with ease as well as being a very competent vocalist. See the band members section of this page for personality requirements, and the influences section of this page for my list of musical turn-ons in no particular order of influence. You'll need to be able to send me MP3s or a MySpace link before I audition you. The recordings can be rough-as-hell and I won't mind at all.
This page is also a place for indie labels, live music venues, and future fans to get a taste of what I do...looking towards my short-term "band goals" which are:
A weekly 2-hour rehearsal at my Santa Rosa, CA studio location until spectacularity is achieved.
A moderate, recreational gigging regiment throughout the North Bay, preceded by personal contact and demos sent to potential venues (while rehearsals are still in-progress).
A modest "record contract" with a local indie label that would allow a modicum of promotion plus cover production costs on physical merchandise.
This is not a get-rich-and-famous enterprise. That version of the music industry has imploded regardless. This is all about making great music, having fun playing it live, and developing a low-key local reputation that would allow us to get heard by people other than our friends and relatives.
Thanks for your time!
P.S. I must note that I've received tremendous help on these recordings from musician friends both local and cross-country, most notably percussion help from Berkeley, CA's musical genius Paul Bertolino, Tony SanFillippo of Bloomington, IL, and Chris Garges of Raleigh, NC. Chris and Tony are tremendous recording engineers as well.
