    John Green's Interests
GeneralWriting and reading, mostly. But I am also interested in: Boxing, child prodigies, conjoined twins, the state of Alabama, contemporary art, soccer, white wine, anagramming, last words, YA books, bluegrass music, Islam and the Islamic world, white wine, and books.
MusicI like bluegrass, mostly. But then sometimes I'll find myself in love with a band that is definitely not bluegrass, like the Mr. T Experience, or Old Crow Medicine Show, or Neutral Milk Hotel, or Bonnie Prince Billy. Mostly I like songs. Current favorite: "Jackson" (as sung by Mr. and Mrs. Cash, not as sung by Ms. Witherspoon and Mr. Phoenix)
MoviesWell, if Paramount makes "Looking for Alaska," I believe I'll be contractually obligated to call it my favorite.
Television
BooksWell, this is going to be long. Okay, let's just do it in categories:

Recent YA books:
King Dork, by Frank Portman
Boy Meets Boy, by David Levithan
Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson
The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky
Funny Little Monkey, by Andrew "Awesome" Auseon Boy Proof, by Cecil Castelucci (note: last name probably misspelled, although she is my friend)
Catch, by Will Leitch
And Many, many others. If you're looking for recommendations, message me with the titles of some other books you've read and liked.

DEAD PEOPLE:
Mark Twain
Zora Neale Hurston
Faulkner
Fitzgerald
Joyce
Capote
Robert Penn Warren
Walker Percy
Flannery O'Connor
Eudora Welty

NOT DEAD PEOPLE: Richard Powers
David Foster Wallace
Jeffrey Eugenides
Michael Chabon
Toni Morrison
Garcia-Marquez (obvious, if you've read ALASKA)

POETS:
Edna St. Vincent Millay (also obvious if you've read ALASKA)
Emily Dickinson
Langston Hughes
Keats
Auden
cummings
Robert Penn Warren

About me:
I'm a writer. My new book, "An Abundance of Katherines," has just been published. You should go to your local independent bookstore and buy a copy, or get one here.

My first novel, "Looking for Alaska," was published in March of 2005. It won the Michael L. Printz Award, and was a finalist for the L.A. Times Book Prize.

I also write for National Public Radio sometimes, and for various magazines and newspapers, and I am the proprietor of the web site http://www.sparksflyup.com.

And now, let us discuss the things that most often come up on myspace:

To answer the questions that I most often get: Yes, this is really me, and no, I don't have any say whatsoever in what happens with the movie, but I'll certainly keep you informed with any news.

Oh, and the song is by Jonathan Coulton, who is--I think we can all agree--a major American genius.

Also, let us briefly discuss the question of whether or not I want to be friends with your band, which is composed of a sextet of 45-year-old harpsichord players or whatever: I do not.

Furthermore, if we can just talk for a moment about whether or not I want to befriend a 'webcam hottie': Thank you but no.

And finally: I am really bad about responding to messages, even when they are not from random bands or webcam hotties, but I do read them all, and I try try try to answer as many as possible.

Who I'd like to meet:
J. D. Salinger. But I tend to doubt he has a myspace.

I went to my University's library, and picked up Looking for Alaska today. I sat down with intentions of reading some, checking it out, and coming home to finish it later. Three hours later, I finished it and put it back in it's place on the shelf.

Thanks for being awesome.
Damn right its all about me!!!

Question: I don't suppose you'd be terribly offended if I brought my copy of The Catcher In The Rye to Chicago for you to sign instead of your own book, eh?

John-

I've commented you before saying dorky little "I love your writing" things, but really, truly, deeply, I appreciate you so much more than that.

I'm going to be blunt. I'm a Twilight fan. But honestly, I enjoy Looking for Alaska much more than any Stephanie Meyer novel. You are a better writer than she. I love how you take the small things into consideration... like when Alaska dies of an "instant" death. The way you pondered what an instant really was sent shivers down my spine. Now whenever people say that word, my mind has a hay-day. I also enjoyed the whole "famous last words" thing. I didn't even realize people cared about others last words.

Most of all, I love how you don't just write books to get them done or to get wads of cash. It was really amazing to find someone with way more skills than Stephen King not aspiring to make as much dough as him.

All in all, you are my favorite author. I'm only a month shy of 16, but one day I hope to publish novels written with an open mind like yours.

Thanks for everything
Hannah :)

Jul 10 2008 10:44 PM

thank you for adding me!

you are very inspiring to me as a writer. although, it may come as a surprise that its not because i have read any of your books (yet), (because i haven't.) So im sure your wondering, "well how can she be inspired by me in writing if she has yet to read any of my books?"
This is because I have of coarse seen your video blogs you have made with your brother, and i have noticed your eloquence in speaking> So, one of your other fans Taylor, and I try to talk like you, and i have seen that sometimes it transfers into a style of writing. I have found that style quite pleasing. thank you.
