Green Chair Dance Group is a dance-theater company based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since its inception, Green Chair has been a uniquely collaborative project, and continually seeks to choreograph highly original movement with a focus on interpersonal relationships, intense physicality, and humor.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
"Stationary is the new moving." -Sarah
"That's a good quote, cuz we're dancers, so it works on many levels." -John
Grounded in the banalities and complications of everyday life but charging headfirst into the unexpected, Green Chair's newest dance stands perspective on its head and offers a fresh look at how, exactly, we move through the world. In a realm of shifting alliances and contradictions, the dancers chart a course from exuberance through tenderness and manipulation. Their adventures seamlessly blend intricate gesture, twisted balances, and highly physical movement into a compelling spectacle of human foibles and relationships. Dances for the Naked Eye probes the direct perceptual capacity of human senses, cultivating an unmediated, physical response running from astonishment to hilarity.

The show so eagerly anticipated finally hit stages last September, showing capacity audiences in Philadelphia and Boston just what DOES happen when you pull the cord and the chute doesn't open. Let's just say it was explosive, delicate, beautiful, and of course humorous.
Read what the Karen Campbell at The Boston Globe said about FOR EMERGENCY USE ONLY:
“Here is a group of dancer/choreographers with a sophisticated eye, great senses of humor, highly original movements, virtuosic abilities and an unbounded aesthetic…After all, we had an evening that took us from the funny to the touching to the dazzling to the satisfying.” (Quinn Bauriedel, Co-Artistic Director, Pig Iron Theatre Company)
“‘FOR EMERGENCY USE ONLY’ is far more subtle dance theater than one might have expected, and that's all to the good. At only 53 minutes long, the collaborative work is inventive, poignant, laugh-out-loud funny, and completely engaging without being literal…. Lucky for Friday's capacity audience, they invited us along for the ride.” (Karen Campbell, The Boston Globe)
“Show up, sit down and brace yourself for the maelstrom.” (Weekly Dig, Boston)
"[Green Chair Dance Group,] you are powerful and smart and energetic and accessible....I like your point of view, your humor, and your inventive choreography. I love how you relate to each other." (Bobbi Block, Tongue & Groove Improv Company)
Green Chair Dance Group “expanded one's point of view as to what dance performance is all about." (Christine Lomuscio, Chair, Weston Commission for the Arts, Weston, CT)
A CityPaper ‘Fringe Pick’ in 2004, “Green Chair Dance Group…impressed the audience with energetic flights of fancy. In a loose, fast and loud fashion, these dancers even changed costumes in plain view with grace and humor.”
(Lori Hill, Philadelphia CityPaper)
“It’s a don’t miss show.” (Sheryl Simons, Powelton Post)
