About me:
GREEN was a dynamic eclectic open mic that ran in various places around Los Angeles from 2000-2007. Founded by Damon Rutledge and musically overseen by DJ Jedi, it was handed over to Rob Sturma (aka Ratpack Slim) and Joshua Silverstein to run with Jedi in 2003. Green held court at Tanner's Coffee (Culver City), The Good Hurt Club (Mar Vista), The UnUrban Cafe (Santa Monica), and finally, The Palmer Room (Culver City). During that time, hundreds of poets, musicians, comedians, and open mic denizens graced the stage, including but not limited to Aloe Blacc, D-Knowledge, Wanda Coleman, Buddy Wakefield, Jack Hirschman, Amber Tamblyn, Emily Wells, Jamie DeWolf, Derrick Brown, Mike McGee, and Rob Zabrecky. There's a little bit of Green in each and every one of us...and we should really get that checked out.
Who I'd like to meet: slam poets, page poets, performers, musicians, visual artists, comics, anyone who digs any of those folks, curmudgeons, cynics, hip hop heads, nerds, benefactors, people who get it.
My first time I ever performed at Green was when it was next door to a club.
The music next door was almost as loud as the poets speaking, tough to stay focused but made me stronger as a poet to stay on point.
Fly Poet's John H. was scouting me and wanted to see if I can rip that crowd...if so then I'd be able to get on his stage.
He picked a perfect night because it was a qualifying round to make the Green Slam team and I was going up against Sekou, Javon, Steve, Budah, Rives and a few other hot poets.
It was one of the hottest slams I've ever been in and I tied for first with Sekou. (word of mouth told me about those dudes, but they didn't know who the hell I was...until that night lol)
Later on that year that team beat us in Nats (2003), but the memory of that night lasts forever and I have it all on video.
Thanks Green for giving poets like me a place to shine.
