GeneralJOIN US AS WE LIGHT A FIRE UNDER CONGRESS There's a lot of bad news about global warming - but the good news is: it's not too late! We can implement solutions, but we need to act fast and we need our government to take the lead. Our aim is to create in Congress champions of global warming solutions. The latest news about the impacts of global warming is out, and scientists' predictions include everything from mass extinctions to food and water shortages. And the impacts are already being felt around the world. So in light of all of this dire news, it's time for Congress to take action. And surprise, surprise, some of them actually are! After years of inaction by the Bush Administration, Congress has finally taken matters into their own hands with a science-based, long-term solution to global warming. Help build support for critical action on global warming, contact your representative today. We owe it to ourselves, future generations, and to the planet to stop global warming now, before it's too late. Take Action >> Tell Congress to pass the Safe Climate Act.
HeroesScientists say we must begin to significantly reduce our emissions within the next ten years if we are to avoid the most dangerous impacts of global warming. The window of opportunity is closing, and the time for action is now. It's time for America to take responsibility as the world's #1 polluter by capping global warming pollution. Coal-fired power plants are the largest single source of global warming pollution. Cars, trucks and SUVs run a close second. Immediate action is required. America must begin to reduce global warming pollution now. We must guarantee global warming pollution reductions, with enforceable deadlines. And we need to start an "Energy Revolution" by promoting clean and efficient sources of energy, not dirty and dangerous fossil fuels or nuclear power. How YOU Can Help Only by acting now and by acting boldly can we combat the devastating consequences of global warming. We must implement policies that will curb and cut our greenhouse gas emissions. Our aim is to create in Congress champions of global warming solutions. And that's where YOU come in. Join Project Hot Seat today, and help us light a fire under Congress. We are reaching for national solutions on climate change, including: A national cap and trade system that makes real reductions within a decade The idea behind a cap and trade system is that industries would be given a peak amount of global warming pollution based on their current pollution rate. That cap would be reduced over time, and industry would be forced to upgrade technology and reduce pollution. Some industries are improving faster than others, and to provide balance, those industries could sell credits to other companies who are lagging behind. But in time, all global warming pollution would be reduced. A national renewable energy standard of at least 20% by 2020 The amount of money invested in renewable energy today is a tiny fraction of the overall energy sector. With little comparative investment, wind and solar technology have come a long way, and have increasingly grown in market share. In fact, globally, wind energy is the fastest growing source of new energy. But to make a major shift away from fossil fuels will require government incentive. That's why we're calling on Congress to require 20% of the nation's energy come from renewable resources by 2020. An increase in average fuel economy to 40 mpg Raising fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks to 40 mpg over the next decade would yield cumulative oil savings of 3 to 4 billion barrels, and 15 billion barrels by 2020. That's more oil than we currently import from the Persian Gulf, and nearly ten times the oil that could be recovered from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).

Fifty activists, including Greenpeace USA Executive Director John Passacantando, were arrested Thursday in front of the State Department for participating in a global warming protest. This marks the biggest number so far of US arrests for the climate. Read more about it here. We know we don’t have time to wait for politics as usual, so Greenpeace is asking you to help step up the pressure, and you don’t have to get arrested like the 50 climate activists in DC ;)

Step It Up!

Greenpeace is teaming up with allies all over the country to make November 3 the biggest day of protests for the climate in history. Last April, hundreds of thousands of people came together in over 1,400 Step It Up demonstrations across the US to tell our government loud and clear that we want real climate action. The demands are stronger now: 80% emission cuts by 2050. No new coal power plants. And a green jobs initiative creating millions of new jobs necessary to build a sustainable society. We need you! Please help build the climate movement that will make it happen.

See If There’s a Step It Up event near you! If not: Sign up to host one yourself!

If there isn’t an event near you, our partners at Step It Up have created a great website that gives you everything you need to put together an excellent event yourself. You don’t have to organize the March on Washington, just get together with a few dozen of your closest friends and send the message to Washington that we won’t sit silently as politicians waste the precious time we need to save our planet.

Let’s make November’s demonstrations a turning point in the fight to save our future. Please tell everyone you know! And sign up to do Step It Up! It’ll be fun.

About me:
We are working on a grassroots environmental campaign in DuPage County. The fundamental purpose is to raise awareness to the importance of global warming, and its' local impacts on northern Illinois. It is called Project Hot Seat, and it is a national campaign that will focus solely on U.S. representatives. The idea is simple. It is to build and organize a grassroots organization in Illinois, congressional district 6. This fall, our representatives will have the opportunity to support some critical legislation pertaining to global warming with reasonable solutions to stop it. This is where Project Hot Seat comes into play. It is time for the voters in district 6 to let Representative Peter Roskam know that global warming and its' local impacts are important issues, and that it is time for Rep. Roskam to be a leader on environmental issues in the House. We are reaching out to the communities in DuPage County, and building a volunteer-based organization that will remind Rep. Roskam what issues are important to his constituents. 300+ Events So Far: Do One Yerself!

To save the climate system that lets us have a good time on our planet, we have to move fast. We now have an opportunity for real action in a bill making its way through Congress this Fall: The Safe Climate Act (HR 1590). The Safe Climate Act is a long-term, science-based response to global warming that sets concrete targets and requires actions necessary to avoid dangerous, irreversible warming of our planet. It’s what we need to move away from disaster and towards the kind of future we all want.

Your Representative could help get this bill passed, but if they don’t hear from you, they might not do it and the bill could fail.

Help Make It Happen!

We’re hand delivering lobby packs promoting the Safe Climate Act to Representatives all over the country during the last week of August, and we want your help. These personal visits are very important, and we’ve got everything you need online. You can do it yourself or with some friends. It takes five minutes to sign up and an hour to drop off the pack. So how about it?

Sign up to do a Hotseat lobby pack drop!

We have more than 300 of these events happening now and we want to do more. If you want to save our planet and can tear yourself away from the computer for a few minutes, these drop off actions are an important way to help. Please sign up to get involved.

Peace
