GREEN vs. GREED's Blurbs |
About me:
Play the ultimate game of chess, pitting the symbols of ecological and
sociological hope (GREEN) against the energy consuming capitalistic
personifications of imperialism (GREED)! The GREEN pawns are Larry Harveyas,
the GREED pawns are lawyers-itas Larry vs. the Lawyers!
Temple of the Indifferent, the collaboration of MB Hanrahan and sTeVe Knauff,
have attended 7 BurningMans (1999, 1st time), done 4 theme camp
installations-two of them formally registered, in Center Camp 2002, 2003.
Those camps were featured in "Beyond BlackRock", a 2005 documentary about
artists and BurningMan Org. We create energetic 2-D/3-D art/video/sound
installations which draw in participants to contemplate the current theme and
come to their own conclusions. We felt that the once and future Leave no
Trace philosophy of BurningMan, proclaimed long before the current rush to
jump on the Green aBandwagona, coupled with the long standing legal wrangling
endured by BurningMan org. just BEGGED to be put forth as a game-GREEN
vs.GREED, a chess game, the thinking personas battlefield of wits.
Years attended Burning Man:
1999', '2000', '2001', '2002', '2003', '2004', '2005', '2006'
Previous Projects:
Temple of the Indifferent Camp 2000, 2001,
Theme Camp, Center Camp 2002, 2003
ArtCar 2000/2003
Artists featured in documentary "Beyond BlackRock"

Who I'd like to meet:
Play the ultimate game of chess, pitting the symbols of ecological and
sociological hope (GREEN) against the energy consuming capitalistic
personifications of imperialism (GREED)! The GREEN pawns are Larry Harveyas,
the GREED pawns are lawyers-itas Larry vs. the Lawyers!
Green vs. Greed is Temple of the Indifferent's response to the GreenMan theme,
an installation of architecture and art that symbolically expounds on
ecological threats and solutions. The camp serves as the grand stage for
actual games of chess that pit the army of Greed against the army of Greed.
Our focus this year is to provide a forum for novices and experts to play out
their strategic campaigns on a 4ax4a chess board, the chess pieces
representing opposing principles of GREED and GREEN:
GREED pieces, in order of diminishing size, 12 in.-6 in. :
King-Personification of aBig Energya
Queen-TV headed broadcaster
Bishop-lumberjack with a chainsaw
Knight- Corporate Exec. on the back of a Laborer
Rook-Skyscraper/Factory
Pawn-Lawyer
GREEN pieces:
King-BurningMan
Queen-Gaia
Bishop-Buddha
Knight-Eco-warrior on a Mountain Bike
Rook-TeePee
Pawn-Larry Harvey
The camp is defined by a mural wall composed of canvases affixed to a PVC
framework that radiates off of and hides our vehicles/private camp area.
The center piece of the mural is seven 5ax7a canvases that incorporate the
green/greed opposition and utilize the design and composition of a royal flush
hand of playing cards-Ace,King, Queen, Jack, 10, plus a joker. The center
panel will have an imbedded video monitor, which will feature our custom mix
of edited media pertinent to the "eco" theme. These mural paintings will all
be painted in shades of green. From this center curved wall will extend on
either side 25a curved canvases, depicting radiating eyes. These Mural
paintings will be black/green and white and fluorescent green, black-lit at
night. The chess board will likewise be black-lite sensitive. Low ambient
music and tones will emanate from the chess board and murals. In addition to
being listed as a camp holding daily and nightly open chess times, we would
solicit chess players by handing out trading cards imprinted with designs from
the mural with our address and open chess playing times.
Chess is the cross cultural, traditional metaphoric abattlefielda for opposing
parties to test their strategic skills. Temple of Indifference believes the
key to change, in this case, a agreen consciousnessa, must begin with a mental
shift, followed by a comprehensive strategy for action. Rather than
didactically belaboring the evils of traditional energy consumption or the
morality of eco-friendly living, we choose to make symbolic representations of
our opinions and present them in a visually arresting environment. Our
installations attract attention and provoke dialogue. We will provide the
opportunity to play out the game of GREEN vs.GREED, which others can
participate, watch and learn from, like in chess tournaments.
