The work of singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Greg Cooper has been bubbling away in the Sydney music scene since 1998. From that year, at the age of 15, Greg was the guitarist and backing vocalist for Sydney-based band Citizen. The band released its debut EP, ‘Distance Between Strangers’, in 2000 to wide acclaim, and received rotation on Triple J. Following Citizen’s demise in 2001, Greg teamed up with his brother James to form the acoustic duo Somehow, recording with producers David Carr (Taxiride, Antiskeptic) and Michael McGlynn (Nathan Tasker, Ross Nobel), whilst performing at some of Sydney’s most loved venues, including The Basement and The Hopetoun.
Since then, Greg has worked extensively as a session guitarist, singer, and saxophonist in both studio and live settings with acts such as Revive (with producer David Nicholas [The Veronicas, George, The Whitlams]) and Amanda Easton (with producer Michael Carpenter [Youth Group, 78 Saab]). Greg has also recorded and performed his own compositions with collaborative Christian outfit Garage Hymnal (www.garagehymnal.com), with whom he continues to record and play live.
Greg has recently recorded his first solo album with producers Michael Carpenter and Matt Fell (Sara Storer, Troy Cassar-Daley, Butterfly 9, Tania Bowra). The album is set for release in 2008. In the lead up to the album’s release, November 2007 saw the release of Greg’s debut EP, which contains the album’s lead single, ‘One Day’, as well as two other album tracks.
Greg’s songs drip with honesty and hope, ranging from dark, melancholic ballads, to driving, optimistic pop rock. He finds true beauty in the heartache and joy that come from a well-crafted melody. Greg is influenced by great songwriters of our time, including the Finn Brothers, John Mayer, Bic Runga, Diesel, and Brooke Fraser. Yet having trained classically on instruments such as piano and saxophone, Greg’s music is also infused with glorious moments that reflect his deep love of orchestral music. He can’t wait to share his songs with the ears of the world.
