Influences
my core was classical, listening to maurice andre and rafeal mendez, and later armando ghitalla and . I grew up listening to a lot of dizzy, chick corea and the brecker bros, it was a great combination to get the bop and the nasty funk. I later listened to dexter gordon, freddie hubbard, chet baker, clifford brown, paul desmond and dave brubeck, and steps ahead---------and a ton of cut-outs that I found at discount records in Ann Arbor. later on I got heavily into phil woods/tom harrell, lew solof, and more pop stuff like sting, steeley dan, styx, and mid century pop. guys that helped influence my lines and ideas were jack schantz, kerry mackillop, jeff Uusitalo, roland paulouci, and a bunch of other cleveland ohio cats. my bias for melodies and hip lines and intervale relationships over patterns and cliches have really shaped my lines and musical tendencies over the last 5 years or so.
In short, my influences have created a mutt, but I'm comfortable with it.
Sounds Like
as others like to believe about their individual sound and style, I like to think I sound only like myself. I'm not objective--------------I can't tell, and it really doesn't matter I guess.

A native of Portland, Oregon and now located in Vancouver Washington, Greg Garrett is a musician in many different stylistic worlds. Garrett’s accomplishments started out in the A2 Bee-Bop Quintet with David Swaim in Ann Arbor Mi., playing jazz standards and other oddities that came up over the course of a night. On the classical side, playing difficult duets and trying to keep up with his brother Roger Garrett, an accomplished classical clarinetist who could play virtually anything was a challange. There were also local jam sessions when gigs weren’t happening, and sit in’s with Tim Ries, Bill Lucas and Fastracks that helped him move in the right direction, as well as learning from Louis Smith in the big band. He relocated to Akron Ohio in the mid 80’s and started playing in top 40 bands and The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and eventually, Dick Johnston and the Artie Shaw Orchestra based in Boston, one of the only non-“ghost” big bands still going. While on the road, he relocated his homebase to Oregon in early 1990. After his last tour in the Florida Keys he tried to lay low in Portland and get a conventional job, but that lasted about one week when he got called to sub and it turned into a lot more gigs. Ever since then, he's been performing and recording. Locally, he's had long stints with The Duffy Bishop Band, Soul Vaccination, Body and Soul, Art Abrams' Swing Machine, Lily Wilde, and the Patrick Lamb Band. And like everyone else on the planet----he's also played with the likes of Lynard Skynard, The O’Jays, Diane Shure, The Moody Blues, The Temptations, Diane Reeves, and Mannheim Steamroller. Currently, he can be heard playing regularly with Patrick Lamb, Pete Petersen and The Porkpie Septet, Ellen Whyte Band w/TheHorns, Rob Scheps Group, the Columbia Brass, The Oregon Symphony, and The Chris Baum Project amongst others.
Since being back in the NW he's appeared multiple x's in many of the festivals in Oregon and Washington, and around the country including Bumpershoot, Kerrville Folk Festival, Mt Hood Festival of Jazz, Mt Hood Jazz Festival, Jazz in the Valley, Wine By the River, Cathedral Park Jazz Festival, Allstate Smooth Jazz Summer Concert, and the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival.
As he states, "I’m a sideman, not a bandleader. That could change in the next year, but I’m content playing everyone else’s music and remaining the unknown horn player who many musicians know, unknown by everyone else. Mostly as a sideman you get whatever comes your way, forcing you to take the terrible sucky gigs as well as the good ones you never forget. You gotta eat. Da man calls for da rent, you make da money any way you can."
.............Well..............there you have it.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THANK YOU for being a friend to Third Eye Theatre Presents: Dylan Hillerman’s Grand Guignol and inviting us into your home – or onto your lap…top !
Make sure you can be there this Friday June 26th at the Back Door Theatre for our Opening Night Extravaganza! It's going to be a sexy and horror-filled blast!
Hey Greg, thanks for the really nice comment, wish I could check out your music-any website with streaming tracks? I used to live in Portland, moved there with Ez Weiss, studied with Rob Scheps, changed Ed Pierce's tire. I miss it out there! Say hi to everyone for me, thanks for checking us out-Kelly
Things are going well, and I'm keeping busy--from your gig calendar it looks like you're busy as well! It was great playing with you at the Winter Gala a few weeks back. Unfortunately I'm not making the Lindy Exchange gig, but I will be at the Gene Harris jazz festival gig, so I look forward to playing with you then!
You know that old joke; guy dies and gets sent downstairs......3 doors: fire and brimstone, iceage, and everyone standing around knee deep in sh@# drinking coffee?
Hey you! OK.... So I got your message and then I don't know what I did with it!! I'm doing well. Thanks so much! How about you?! I went to a gig tonight to see Patrick L., Miguel M., and Tim E. etc. play. That was way fun! It was a nice break in the middle of my week. They rocked it!! Looking forward to seeing you and Pete again... My favorite horn players ever! :-) Hope you are having a good week!
