"These composions function just below the levels of conscious perception" - The Wire.
Greg Haines is an English musician and composer currently living in Berlin, who specialises in exploring the middle-ground between the academic world of contemporary classical music and the freedom found in genres often referred to as experimental or electro-acoustic.
He was born in a small Southern-English town in the 1980’s, where through lack of anything else to do began to take an interest in music and started putting together small bands and recording on borrowed equipment until he was introduced by an enthusiastic music teacher to the works of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Terry Riley and more – composers that Greg still considers major influences over his work. After this turning point, Greg began to develop his piano (and eventually cello) playing. Having neither the opportunity or the resources to write music for large ensembles, he began layering and processing his own sounds to create the desired result.
Shortly after, Haines discovered the work of Arvo Pärt and in it found his biggest inspiration. Pärt’s intricate use of both space and density informed Greg’s first solo release, “Slumber Tides“, on the Norwegian Miasmah label in 2006. The album was critically-acclaimed worldwide, leading one writer to state: “This is music to fall into and let it embrace your heart and soul. Be warmed and sadden by its slow unfolding beauty and grace. Clearly one of the most luxurious and emotional rich debut albums you’re likely to come across this year, or any other year for that matter.“ (Musique Machine)
In the wake of his debut, Greg toured Europe extensively (which he still does to this day) while befriending many other musicians along the way. Many of these friendships resulted in collaborations, including work with Machinefabriek and The Dakota Suite, as well as live performances with Sam Amidon, Jasper TX and Ben Frost. In 2008, Greg joined forces with the Dutch musician Wouter Van Veldhoven – the product of which being the vinyl-only release, “Three Days of Fever“ on the EatThis label.
As well working with choreographers including Meg Stuart and Ina Christel Johannessen, and having music used by various institutions such as the BBC, Greg has also been quietly working on a second solo album for the last two years. Titled “Until the Point of Hushed Support“, it will hopefully be released in 2009.

Svarte Greiner (Deaf Center/Miasmah/Type) explores deep into a dark, mysterious and disturbing universe. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Earth, Volcano the Bear, David Darling & Deathprod, the music is draped in Lynchian mysticism and horror film cinematics. "The music of Svarte Greiner is practically perfect. It's like that sound in our heads we've been imagining for ages but had never actually heard." - Type Records.
The Sight Below (Rafael Anton Irisarri/Miasmah/Immune) draws as much on modern genre progenitors like Brian Eno, Robin Guthrie and My Bloody Valentine as it does from the more historic traditions in neo-classicism from Erik Satie and Olivier Messiaen. His album Glider has appeared on Thom Yorke's radar in making the Radiohead's lynchpin's top ten playlist.
His debut album Navigare soon to feature on the Miasmah label, Simon Scott (former Slowdive) is set to be a household name in conceptual music. Simon is the former Slowdive drummer, co-producer of Televise, producer of Seavault, and owner of KESH Recordings label.
