OCCUPATIONS: Musician, Composer, Author, Visual Artist
Greg Herriges plays an eclectic mix of original and traditional “whirled” music on guitar, voice, and bouzouki (Greek lute), with a unique approach honed by his studies of Asian and other international styles. A virtuoso performer and award-winning composer, his music and writing have found international acclaim. Herriges was selected to receive the 2009-10 Bush Artist Fellowship for Music Composition, which speaks volumes for his artistry and dedication to his music.
With a background in progressive rock and classical guitar, Greg studied ethnomusicology (traditional World music), working with masters of Indian classical music, Chinese pipa, and Indonesian gamelan. Mixing those influences with his own acoustic sensibilities, he spins new webs out of everything from Turkish folk and Bollywood film music to Japanese koto tunes and surf-rock. His Indo-fusion group, Telluric Currents, features a Hindustani vocalist, tabla, and world percussion—but he is equally at home “letting one guitar play him.”
Also an author/arranger of music instructional books, his recent books/CDs, World Guitar and Guitar Explorer (publ. Hal Leonard), explore the stringed traditions of the world with novel approaches on the guitar. His authoring credits also include the entire Guitar Songs for Dummies series and contributions to Guitar Edge magazine.
As a composer and accompanist, Herriges also creates music for theater, providing live accompaniment and sountrack music for Zaraawar Mistry’s Children’s Stories from India, Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard (presented by Hamline University), and In the Heart of the Beat Theatre’s Beneath the Surface and Are You Thirsty?, among many others.
“...a gifted musician who is able to bring the best sounds from several cultures into one type of intriguing music.” –Folkworld (Germany)
“It Plays Me is an album of amazing sounds... will mesmerize anyone who gives it a fair hearing.” –Rambles, a cultural arts magazine (U.K.)
“...a ‘musician’s musician’s musician”...outrageously talented...” –Wild Fruit Folk Music
“...an acoustic guitar virtuoso [and] musical syncretist... brings together a wide range of musical traditions to create imaginative, stirring musical pieces. Telluric Currents is an exquisite tapestry of exotic sound.”–The Voice Magazine
“Guitar renegade... Herriges always comes off as native maestro, never slumming dilettante. His technique on both guitar and bouzouki is formidable, his feel for diverse cultures exemplary.”–Minneapolis Star Tribune

It features the last two performances with Tony Ellis still alive, and some footage from the tribute show we played on the night of his funeral.
There are some cool covers, as well as some NEW music that will be on our upcoming EP. We're very excited about the new music and we'd like to share a sneak peak with you. Here's a video of a new tune called Run Bobby Run:
