Greg McGarvey is a Jersey Fresh musician, writer, and photographer living under the shadow of the Tullytown Landfill in Historic Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA.
Greg's grandfather "J.J." bought him his first guitar around the age of five and he has rarely been seen without one since. Greg spent his childhood surrounded by the melodic brilliance of The Beatles and, especially, The Everly Brothers, whose albums and concerts inspired him to become a musician and whose album jackets, his father Scott claims, taught him how to read. He spent his teens studying the music of NIRVANA, R.E.M., and Neil Young, and arrived in adulthood with a musical mind pried open widely enough to love the sounds of a Sonic Youth electric guitar massacre and a Buddy Emmons pedal steel guitar solo with equal passion.
Greg started performing publicly in 2004 with high school classmate Matt McDevitt and, upon meeting drummer Nick D'Amore in 2007, formed GETdownSOULS. The SOULS were an underground favorite in the so-called Genius Belt of Bucks County, and performed acclaimed shows in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Philadelphia, Trenton, every corner of New Jersey, and every corner of Bucks County, including regular concert-length performances at John & Peter's Place in New Hope.
Greg's MySpace music player includes a random sampling of songs performed alone, with the new band Deluxe Thumps, and with other projects including Nick D'Amore, in addition to selections from his ongoing work in freeform sound recordings. Currently, these recordings are available for free download.
DELUXE THUMPS, live at Curran's in Philadelphia. "Of These Times," "Deluxe Jazz Thumps," and "Stranded On The Branches."
