Influences
I think that I have been greatly influenced by my inner spirit, which I believe comes from a supreme being, God?. Then my parents who brought me into this world that were musical and encouranged something that they saw inside of me, like they did with all of their children. They had a musical background. Both my Father and Mother could sing and play the piano. My Dad being a native from Trinidad and Tobago, and my Mother from Panama, I was introduced to Calypso, Latin, and Carribean music. They also enjoyed Jazz and Classical, so I listened to all of that stuff growing up. I was born in the U.S. so I also listened to all American music. Jazz, R&B, Blues, Pop, Rock, Folk, Country, etc. Then, I must include my brothers and sisters, mostly my brothers who were older than me and already playing music. We played a lot together and started a band that ended up having International recognition. Starpoint. I think the rest came from life's experiences and performances with different people. Recently Najee, Angela Bofill, Catfish Hodge, Marion Meadows, Nat Adderley Jr., Melba Moore, Bobbi Humphrey, and John Lee.
I have a very large record and CD collection, which I call my Library of music. I spent countless hours listening and learning. I think that listening is key in all forms of communication. Particularly when making music with others and learning different idiom's.
Here are some of the artst I feel I've been influenced by:
Mahavisnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Weather Report, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gilespie, Herbie Hancock-The Head Hunters/V.S.O.P. etc., Dreams, Blood,Sweat & Tears, Chicago, Chase, Tower Of Power, Michael and Randy Brecker, Rufus and Chaka , Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Bonnie Rait, Jimi Hendrix, Mandrill, Larry Graham and Graham Central Station, George Clinton and Funkadelic, Sly and the Family Stone, James Brown, Cold Blood, Kool and the Gang, Ohio Players, New Birth, Mother's Finest, Edwin Birdsong, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, The Jackson Five, Jon Luc Ponty, Jerry Goodman, John McLaughlin, John Ambercrombie, Jan Hammer, early Santana, Jimi Smith, Chick Corea, Keith Jarret, Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Narada Michael Walden, Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, Steve Gadd, Peter Erskin, Harvey Mason, Mike Clarke, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Airto, Chester Thomson, Gerry Brown, Vinnie Calaiuta, Ralph Humphrey, Sandy McKee, David Garibaldi, Bill Bruford, Allan White, Led Zepplin, John Bonham, Gary Husband, Allan Holdsworth, Bill Conners, Stanley Clarke, Jeff Beck, Cream, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Van Halen, Yes, Gentle Giant, Phill Collins and Genesis, Brand X, Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, Gong, Hatfield and the North, Gilgamesh, Bach, Frank Zappa, just for starters!! Whew!! I'll try to finish up later!
I have had a long history of playing music which began with my family in my early years. I started branching out on my own in the early 80's, during, before, and after being signed to a major record label with the family group STARPOINT. STARPOINT recorded 10 albums. All of the albums did pretty well with the 7th one selling over 600,000 and going "Gold" on Warner Bros.,Elektra Asylum Records. STARPOINT toured with Luther Vandross, The Isley Brothers, Morris Day and many others. I have been a member of and/or performed with most of the popular local bands in my area. Greg Phillips Trio,Carey Zeigler and Expensive Hobby,Band of 1,000 Names(Paul Reed Smith),Van Dyke and Glaser Band,Mama Jama,Duende,Laughing Colors,JarFlys,Dean Rosenthal,Angie Miller,Linwood Taylor,James Mabry,Non-Fiction(Meg Murray and Bryan Ewald), and more!
I toured and recorded with some major recording artist. The most recent major artist are Najee, Angela Bofill.
The latest concert was with the Angela Bofill Band, put together to benefit Angela after having a stroke. The Angela Bofill Band was: Melba Moore(Vocals), Marion Meadows(Sax), Bobbi Humphrey(Flute), Nat Adderley Jr.(Piano), John Lee(Bass), and myself on Drums.
I had never performed with these great musicians before. We had a short rehearsal at sound check and the show was very succesfull! Other performances by this band are in the works!

Hi Greg, I've had a few GM's tonite!.... With that in mind have been sending notes to old friends. I've noticed that as everyone has been musically progressing, I've been staying myself, loud and three chords. Hope thats alright!! Happy fourth and hope all is well. No matter what your playing, your a bad ass rock and roll drummer. I've heard you do some things over the years that only Bonham could do.
