Influences
"My roots are jazz and rock. I'm drawn to gypsy cultures...Afro-Cuban, North Indian, and Spanish and Turkish, and influences from these cultures broaden my approach to jazz. There's a lot of struggle with the definition of jazz and how, as artists, we fit into classification. As Duke Ellington used to say, 'I don't play jazz, I play Duke Ellington.' Cecil Taylor used to say the same thing. I simply respond to the sounds that I hear. I'm always listening. I think music responds to who we are now. There's a sense of mystery about all beautiful music. It forces you to question where it comes from. I have always found this intriguing. If you're ever completely in the moment in your own time, you are eternal. I hope my music achieves that." GJ -
Sounds Like
"Great moments. Electric, acoustic, and synthesized guitars are both strong and subtle...Bridges the gap between musical adventure and mass appeal." Downbeat................ "High energy polyrhythmic fusion to pastoral impressionistic sketches. In both, James' guitar lines are simple, direct, and melodic." Guitar Player..................... "A first-rate electric guitar player." Variety....................... "A fine guitarist whose playing is reminiscent of Pat Metheny in its ringing melodies and pastoral harmonies. James is also an interesting linear improvisor in straight ahead contexts. His albums on Rogue Records tread between jazz and internationalist "new age" music idioms." San Francisco Bay Guardian............................ "James' loose compositional structures allow for great improvisational flights. This is acoustic jazz with only the occasional flamenco overtone, but great music." Flamenco Connection.............................. "Any Gregory James release is cause for celebration...James' writing and guitar playing are at times so lyrical you expect a vocalist to join in, but don't notice (or mind) when one never appears. The mix of jazz and world musics, of electric and acoustic instruments, of simple melodies and impressive chops, makes me homesick for the City By The Bay's talented melting pot." Dan Forte, Guitar Player, Musician................................ "James proves that despite what you've heard, fusion can still sound interesting." Mix.......................... "James and company deliver a punch in the labonza to the ECM monarchy by delivering a cool school date loaded with the long missing dose of emotion. This travelogue of sound opens your head up wider than the first real day of Spring." Midwest Record Recap.............................. "Enjoyable, thought-provoking music...listen for James' smooth touch and flawless technique." Bass Frontiers.................................. "There's no sense playing it if you don't bring something new to it." Gregory James
