EDIBLE RESTAURANT
A new album by
GRETA GERTLER & THE EXTROVERTS
The award-winning Australian singer-songwriter and pianist announces the release of EDIBLE RESTAURANT - a tasty pop exploration into the meaning of food (and more), recorded with her brilliant New York-based tuba rock band and mixed by master chef, Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Joan as Policewoman, The Ramones).
Greta met THE EXTROVERTS whilst cocktail waitressing at Barbes, a popular music venue in Brooklyn. The band members, who had to take a Myers-Briggs personality test before joining, include Slavic Soul Party’s Matt Moran (mobile percussion unit) as well as dueling guitarists, Pete Galub (Amy Allison) and Michael Gomez (Hazmat Modine). The album also features special "guestroverts" Clare Muldaur, Olivier Manchon (Sufjan Stevens), Josh Camp (One Ring Zero), Eliot Krimsky (Flying) and Jonathan Maron (Groove Collective).
Greta has spent the past eight years performing in Australia, the US and Europe. She has opened for Martha Wainwright, Glenn Tilbrook (Squeeze), Jolie Holland, Keren Ann and Madeleine Peyroux, co-written two Top 40 songs ("Blow Up the Pokies" and "Charlie 3") recorded by The Whitlams (Warner Music Australia), and appeared numerous times on national television and radio in Australia and New York.
Her debut solo release "The Baby That Brought Bad Weather" (2004) is a lush, orchestral pop album featuring over 30 of New York’s finest musicians. It received glowing praise from American press and radio, described as "one of those hoped-for revelations that emerged from the never ending pile of new releases" by Vin Scelsa (WFUV) and "a sonic revelation and lyrical treat" by John Rhodes (Headliner Magazine, Radio City Music Hall).
"David Byrne got it right: we need more songs about buildings and
food. This is Greta Gertler’s third consecutive brilliant album: it’s a gorgeously stark, retro, mostly acoustic album, tastefully produced with grand piano, electric guitar, tuba, drums and occasional strings. The album’s title track vividly evokes the chaos of a busy eatery at peak hour, an endless series of unexpected shifts." - Alan Young, Lucid Culture.com
"As those lucky enough to see her on a recent visit know, all those years living a not-quite-glamorous life in New York as a frequently working, occasionally eating musician have not blunted the charm of Bondi’s Greta Gertler. She still has the light touch that can make a song bounce along like a cheeky smile on a naughty-but-nice schoolgirl." - Bernard Zuel, Sydney Morning Herald
" She has a spacious voice and a welcome weakness for lushly orchestrated seventies-era singer-songwriter pop." - The New Yorker Magazine
"An intriguing and ultra-talented musician on the rise, possessing a
sweetly lyrical voice, an arrestingly quirky sensibility, and a chamber-pop band that fits no pigeonholes. Some hear Rufus Wainwright, other Aimee Mann. All I hear is Greta Gertler - and I like what I hear." - Terry Teachout, Wall Street Journal

Greta Gertler & The Extroverts's Friend Space (Top 24)
how did the solo gig go?? ..thought i'd let you know I have a CD coming out on New York label 'Thirsty Ear' on Oct 21. Well actually its my mate Pete Wyer's album and i'm just on one of the tracks. anyway.. getting closer to NY if only sonically spun in your direction. its a sort of narrative play featuring the whisky old voice of Steve Dalachinsky. I believe there to be a launch but right now it would take a magical potion to get me accross that ocean. ..off to glastonbury instead.
hope all is well, fine and spirited with you right now.
