Gretchen Schmaltz is frankly but sweetly disentangled with life. Laced Up Tightly, her debut album, is a pop-up book. You may think it’s an ordinary turn the page book on the outside, but once she begins playing, reality is a picture that is all of a sudden enticing. Gretchen’s rainbowic melodies and perfectly timed pauses charm us. We are invited into the world of an old soul who is, at 24, tired and bluesy. This pop-up book never gets old. The story is too good.
Gretchen’s devotion to her music is obvious when we learn that she had the opportunity to go to medical school, as she informs us before performing “Fire for Wings” at a local Houston venue. If you’ve ever had a conversation with her before, you’ll observe that adipose tissue is her favorite term and while her accent isn’t really southern, it’s friendly.
With a variety of literary and musical influences, Gretchen is no stranger to discovery. She is well versed in folk attitude, feeling, and grace. Her voice is strong but light and is comforting, kind of like a rainfall before bedtime. You get the feeling, though, while listening to her album, that this is only the calm before the storm. Laced Up Tightly is a must have for those who just want to hear good music, simply.
