Derek Benz and J.S. Lewis grew up together in the American Midwest and were the best of friends. Max Sumner might only be twelve years old, but how many other people can say that they have defeated a dragon, turned a Tundra Troll into a pile of ice crystals, met the rumored father of all vampires, and fought an army of werewolves?
It all started the night Max found an enchanted book in his grandmother's attic. He didn't know the monsters painted on those ancient pages were actually alive, or that it was going to be his job as the Guardian of the Codex Spiritus to keep them in the book. Nobody bothered to tell him that until it was too late. So before he knew any better, Max and his friends let all of those monsters out of the book. It was a treacherous mistake.
Ever since that day, it's been up to Max and his friends, who call themselves the Grey Griffins, to save the world from the evils they set free. Life in their sleepy town of Avalon, Minnesota turned chaotic. But after finally stopping the nefarious Lord Sumner -- Max's own father -- and his Black Wolf Society from sending the world into a second Ice Age, Max and the Grey Griffins hoped for some peace and quiet.
Then they found the cursed deck of Round Table cards once owned by the nefarious Otto Von Strife. The deck contained powerful cards that made winning the game almost too easy, but unfortunately the Griffins didn't understand just how powerful that deck was. Strangely, the paintings on those cards started coming to life, just like the monsters from the Codex Spiritus once had -- only this time, they were animating on their own.
Soon the Griffins discover that Von Strife has returned from a long imprisonment seeking more than his stolen Round Table Cards. Von Strife wants to free The Immortals -- a group of nine powerful beings bannished by the Templar long ago. Now it's up to Max and the Griffins to stop Von Strife before it's too late.

When my son got out of school for summer break I was looking for a good chapter book for him. I wanted something he could keep reading through summer and I found the Revenge of the Shadow King,long story short my boy read all three books in less than a month (and that was because he gave himself a few days off,he wanted the books to last) He LOVES your books and so do I,we read them together and I too am in love with the Griffins,can't wait for the fourth book,we are happy to be a part of the Grey Griffin world :D
While waiting for the last Harry Potter book, I was eager for something to read. A worker at Barnes & Noble recommended the Grey Griffins series. I've been addicted ever since. I love everything from the storyline to the characters. These books will one day be great reads for my two boys (4 & 1 yrs. old). Thank you so much for the friend Add and I'm patiently waiting for book 4!
