Grigory Smirnov is a composer and piano/keyboard player
Born in Novosibirsk (Siberia, Russia), Grigory Smirnov studied piano at the Novosibirsk Music College (1996-2000) and composition at the Novosibirsk State Conservatoire (2000-2006) with Yuri Yukechev (the chairman of the Siberian Organization of the Russian Composers Union). He is currently a graduate student at The Juilliard School (New York) where he is studying composition with is one of the most prominent American composers Christopher Rouse.
Among his awards is a prize of the IV International Prokofiev Competition (2003, St. Petersburg) for Sonata "Stained Glasses" for two pianos.
Grigory Smirnov composes chamber, orchestral, choral and electronic music. Working mainly in a contemporary classical idiom, he also involves experimental, jazz and electronic features into his music. Some works of Grigory Smirnov have been published by Edition Svitzer (Denmark)
In addition to his composer’s activity Grigory Smirnov is a piano, electronic keyboards and organ performer. He performs both prepared works and free improvisations as soloist and in ensemble.
