Gringo Starr started when Adam approached John about starting a band. The two were respectively "running" (with help from their roommates) the ADD Loft and the Day Old Basement, the two DIY venues in Macomb, Illinois. After watching all the wild crazy house party shows go down in their living rooms, they too wanted to enjoy playing in front of 50+ drunken college kids on a weekly basis. Adam, in particular, was upset with the lack of good 90's style pop-punk bands that were available to play shows. A few months after asking John to start a band, John reached Aly and the three members discussed their first practice, which was around Valentine's Day, 2008.
After a few practices with "5" guitars and no drums, the Gringo Tribe decided they needed a drummer. They entertained several options before they went with Trent. With Trent, Gringo Starr would be ready to play a show in a few weeks. Around this time, Aly, who at the time was putting together the "Taste of Macomb," put Gringo Starr on the bill--before any songs were fully constructed.
Given this short timeline, Adam and Aly worked diligently to prepare lyrics a few days before the first show. As luck would have it, the day they worked on lyrics happened to be the day Western Illinois University was threatened with gun violence. This was the basis for the song War Cow. Like the other students at WIU, Adam and Aly decided to "have a few nips" that day (school was canceled) before they co-wrote three songs. This is the reason those songs have such silly lyrics.
Adam had booked a show at the ADD Loft and a few bands dropped. He decided to put Gringo Starr on a week before the "Taste of Macomb" show. The Gringo Tribe was marginally confident in their ability to play the songs they had just learned. They made it happen and got some pretty good reviews from the drunken kids in the living room.
After their first few shows, Adam decided he wanted to take the show on the road. He set up 5 shows for June 2008 and 7 shows for July 2008 spanning 5 states. The shows in June went well; Playing with the Cracks is always a pleasure.
However, at the last minute Trent decided to flake out on playing the shows in July. He did so via text message, much to the dismay of Adam who had invested a substantial amount of time to booking the shows. This created a rift between Adam and Trent, ultimately ending Trent's tenure with Gringo Starr on very bad terms.
Enter Boner LaJeoner:
Because Trent didn't have the balls/decency to answer any of Adam's many calls, Adam taught Brian the songs 23 hours before playing a memorable set at the Red Stone Room.
Gringo Starr played their last show on August 8th at Mixtapes! in East Moline. Adam left for Atlanta, GA to become a community psychologist. John moved on to the Dope Boy All-Stars. Aly is working on her fitness. She blows kisses that keeps them boys on rock-rock. Boner is working on his perma-bone. And Trent is working on his interpersonal relationship skills.
This band has been a riot to play with. The songs are so fun and can really get people moving. One thing that the Gringo Tribe take pride in is that they will be remembered for their powerful live show. After it was all said and done, Gringo Starr played 13 shows.
