Sounds Like
Something familiar but different. It smells like a dark forest.
THREE MUSIC OBSESSED INDIVIDUALS MEET TO FIND COMMON MUSICAL GROUND.
Raised in Minnesota, Becky Aur, singer/songwriter for Grooming the Crow, grew up listening to a steady dose of 60’s folk music such as Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen, Peter Paul and Mary, and Cat Stevens. Acoustic guitars and vocal harmonies were constantly streaming from the speakers of her father's old reel to reel player. Since then her musical interests have taken her forward into the current world of the independent music scene as well as further back into early delta blues recordings. Many of these influences show up in Aur’s songwriting; from alt-country to acoustic punk to Americana to Indie folk. Layered on top of all that are surreal poetic lyrics inspired by the likes of Michael Stipe (REM) and Robert Pollard (GBV), giving the music a slightly progressive and psychedelic feel.
Having grown up in the Boston area, drummer Ronnie Kennedy found himself exposed to a wide variety of music from early punk to 70's psychedelic rock to jazz to the experimental rock of such bands as Morphine. In the 90’s he fell in love with the ever growing singer-songwriter/folk scene of Cambridge and Somerville, Massachusetts. A scene with a heavy dose of female songwriters and band leaders. In moving out to San Francisco he hoped to find an outlet for his new found interest in the folk genre. Through an ad placed on Craigslist in late 2007, he met songwriter Becky Aur of Grooming the Crow.
The newest member of the band is bassist/guitarist Steve Davy. Arriving in San Francisco five years ago by way of London, Hong Kong, and LA, he has been involved in a variety of musical ensembles. From jazz-cabaret to post-punk to alt-rock, over the years, he's really challenged his musical palate. Another successful Craigslist connection, he now finds himself exploring the melodic "back woods" sounds of Americana folksters, Grooming the Crow.
