Although he has already released four critically acclaimed albums under his own name since 2001, The Greater Good is a notable first in pianist Robert Mitchell's fast moving career. It's his recording debut in the traditional Jazz piano trio format, "For years people had been encouraging me to come forward with a trio", he reflects. "But there are quite a few interesting piano trios in the Jazz world from Keith Jarrett onwards, so I felt I had more of a chance developing things with larger groups and formed Panacea, which in its original form was six or seven people."
Recorded in June 2007, The Jamil Sheriff Octet’s new album, Backchat, reflects the growth of the ensemble from its first rehearsals in 2003, and the release of its debut album, Daydreams, in 2004. The Octet still consists of the original eight members - Jamil Sheriff (piano), Pat McCarthy (guitar), Ben Martin (saxes), Joel Purnell (saxes), Andrew Colman (trumpet), Kevin Holbrough (trombone), Zoltan Dekany (bass), and John Perry (drums) - and Jamil promises ‘the feel of the band is much the same as always: hard hitting, post bop influenced modern jazz’.
