NEW YORK DOLLS, BOWIE, GUNS N ROSES, THE SWEET AND ALL THAT OTHER CHEESY SHIT. PEOPLE LOVE IT. WHY? I DONT KNOW. MAYBE THEY'RE AS MENTAL AS THE BAND? ITS ALL IN THE DELIVERY AND MAKEUP AND UNDERWEAR. YOU WANNA SHOW? COME AND HAVE A LOOK. WHAT HARM COULD IT DO , APART FROM HEARING LOSS AND A HANGOVER? IF YOU ACCIDENTLY GET DRUNK, BLAME THE BAND. THE PUBLICAN WILL LOVE YOU FOR IT.
Sounds Like
A HERD OF HORNY RHINOS HUMPING A SHOPPING TROLLEY IN FISHNETS.
The Groove Robbers played their first gig in December 2001. The members of the band had been playing for many years in various musical genres including blues, soul, funk and rock. Billy Frost the bass player had actually made it as a rock star in the eighties in the band 1927 along with his brother Gary. Front man Guy Delandro had written songs with INXS, Icehouse and Richard Clapton and had his own record deal with Warners in Los Angeles in the eighties.
The concept was to only play material that every member of the audience would know no matter how cheesy or hacked. Spinal Tap, 70s glam rock and 80s poodle-hair metal bands provided the idea of dressing and acting like rock stars and using every pathetic rock cliché possible at all times whilst simultaneously taking the piss out of rock stars in general and making a mockery of the industry.
The costumes became more bizarre and the antics of Guy have earned the band cult status at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel where they have had a 2-week residency every winter since 2003.
They have played various corporate gigs, private parties and continue to attract a large following in pubs on the North Coast of NSW. They are based in Bellingen but that hasn’t stopped them from gigging everywhere between Thredbo in the snowy mountains to the tropical Tweed Coast.
They have jammed on stage with legendary guitarist Deniz Tek from Radio Birdman, the Brewster Brothers from the Angels, Paul Wheeler (drummer for Bowie, Icehouse and more recently sneeky sound system) , Tim Farris and Kirk Pengilly of INXS and Brian McFadden of Westlife.
There is absolutely no shoe gazing with this band. It’s total entertainment from the first song. The stench of rock fills the room and the audience join in. In fact audience participation is encouraged meaning that on some occasions there are twice as many people on the stage as the band
With a motto like “no shame, no gain” you will understand that anything goes, as long as it gets the audience laughing and dancing. Make no mistake, you get loud filthy stinking rock music but with a totally nutty show thrown in as well.
