I need people to help me this week. . . . . . . . If people can each donate just £5 to the African
Workshop we can start running again. I know we are all skint but it is less than two
pints ! . . . . . . . .
THE AFRICAN WORKSHOP HELPS KIDS IN A SQUATTER SETTLEMENT ON THE EDGE OF BAMAKO - MALI. . . . . . . . . . .
It is run by a group of local artists and musicians : Salif and
Amadou from GROUPE AFRICA SON, who are in charge, have no money themselves but they do everything they can
for their community. (SEE THE PICTURES...). . . . . . . . .
They teach kids traditional Malian music and stories, they show them how to make
instruments and how to print cloth. And they do all this with whatever they can get
their hands on. They make their own dyes from tree bark and leaves and never have
paper or pens for the children. . . . . . . . .
A gift from us of £150 would make a massive difference. Amadou would be able to make
a few instruments to sell to the tourists who’ll start coming over soon. Salif will
be able to buy art materials and food for the children and volunteers. . . . . . . . .
The kids are so keen to learn. It is a real shame when they turn up and there is
nothing for them to use. Seeing them with a new book or a set of crayons is amazing-
you can be absolutely sure your money will be helping in a very direct and
inspirational way. . . . . . . . . .
I gave them £100 when I was over there and they produced 24 t-shirts, 12 jumpers and
a load of mats and scarves to sell on, hopefully generating more money. They also
fed the teachers for a while. . . . . . . . .
I’ll start this next donation off with a £10 - and I haven’t even got a job!
Please, have a think about whether you can spare £5 and let me know. I’d really like
to get this money wired to them by the end of the week so either come round a give
it to me or email and I’ll send bank details. . . . . . . . . . .

BIO MUSIC ! (Musique BIO, non polluante... et éducative !!!). . . . . .
GROUPE AFRICA SON. . . . . C'est un trio, mais des fois ils sont quatre, ou quatre autres... en fait, les trois personnages centraux s'entourent parfois d'un flûtiste (devenu aussi chauffeur de taxi la nuit) appelé Jeune Bala, ou occasionnellement d'un percussionniste comme Baba pour cette prise de son imprévue.
En parallèle du travail musical avec le groupe, Salif Samaké et Amadou Soumaré font jouer de la musique aux enfants par le biais des associations locales d'aide aux enfants de la rue. Bercés par la musique et les chants traditionnels depuis leur plus jeune âge, ils veulent transmettre ce que leurs aînés leur ont appris de plus précieux. De son côté, Amadou Cissé, le violoniste aveugle, tente de subsister au coeur de la tumultueuse métropole, Bamako étant une ville extraordinaire à condition de ne pas y vivre dehors !
Pour ceux qui ont la chance de pouvoir lire l'anglais, n'hésitez pas à lire, ci-dessus, la lettre de Ben Holt, un reporter anglais qui a rencontré cette équipe et les a suivi à Bamako pendant deux mois.
L'enregistrement de cet album a été réalisé avec seulement deux micros en juin 2006, d'où la restitution basique du son, ce qui est aussi un choix réaliste compte tenu des conditions de vie de ces artistes. La magie de ce groupe acoustique, c'est la maîtrise naturelle de leur son d'ensemble. Fruit d'une rencontre imprévue, cette prise de son en direct s'est déroulée en extérieur, dans l'environnement sonore de la Maison des Jeunes, au quartier du fleuve à bamako - Mali.
