U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo surprised many people by voting to allow oil drilling as close as 50 miles off U.S. coastlines, among them state government officials and environmental groups that expressed concern Wednesday. The bill was passed Tuesday night in the House. The measure would allow states bordering the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to approve offshore drilling 50 or more miles off their coasts. States would have no say in drilling that occurs 100 miles or more offshore.
LoBiondo was one of only 15 Re-publicans who backed the bill.
