Bio
Grrl Fair is a D.I.Y. yearly showcase held in honor of International Womyn's Day that promotes community and the arts, bringing attention to local Female Artists, Photographers, Filmographers, Activists, DJs, Musicians, Zinesters, Speakers, Workshoppers, etc... in and around Santa Ana/Orange County. "BECAUSE we want and need to encourage and be encouraged in the face of all our own.. insecurities, in the face of beergutboyrock that tells us we can’t play our own instruments, in the face of “authorities” who say our bands/zines/etc are the worst in US..." -Riot Grrrl Manifesto Grrl Fair rides on the neo-wave of the 1990’s Riot Grrrl Movement; it has created a.. supportive environment for both girls and young women because of its concern mostly with feminist issues that are used as a platform to sing about, or yell in many cases. It is inclusive of all styles of music; an eclectic mish mash of bands. This is a time for all grrl bands to take back the music we were told we could not play. This is about music - being in bands, not watching them or being groupies - but it was also about finding a voice through writing, via fanzines; and it was about a political voice: anger about society's treatment of women, with domestic abuse, rape, sexuality, the need for safer streets, abortion rights and equal pay among the issues. We neo third-wave riders are also more concerned with the cultural representation of women and its effects than our second-wave counterparts... We are more than supportive of anarchist ideals of feminism/equality and strength; the majority of Santa Ana residents does not identify with feminists or even know what feminism means. We hope to reach a wider audience by not pigeon holing ourselves into a certain genre. If all participants are hardcore feminists fine, but we should make all women, regardless of affiliation, feel welcome. We want a grandmother to feel as welcome as a punk kid... Art is just as important as the music; a grrl does not have to be onstage in order to feel validated as an artistic/talented individual. All forms of art shall forever be tied with Grrl Fair which encompasses an attitude that attempts to empower women to create a personal culture through do it yourself activities. This was born out of the “punk” scene where rebellion was expressed in attitude, appearance, style, and music... Grrl Fair whole heartedly promotes a safe space for females and we are heavily seeking anti-sexist males who would not question, “Why do women need to have this event?” We need those males who are willing to help us out; we just want a space for our own. Characterized by certain punk philosophies, in that grrls actively engage in cultural production, creating our own music and fanzines rather than following existing materials. We are a network of young women interested in challenging male hegemony both within the underground punk scene and society in general... March 12th. ~ GRRL FAIR. -

BECAUSE we want and need to encourage and be encouraged in the face of all our own
