I guess that we should start with a short background and introduction as to how we all got together. It all started off years ago..."Zrinski" actually evolved from the popular local Croatian band "Jadran". Jadran entertained the Croatian community in Southern California throughout the 60's, 70's, and 80's. The first Zrinski was formed in 1992 as a four piece band, with John Berkovich on guitars, Mike Mandich on drums, Bobby Mihovilovic ..boards and accordian, and Davor Ferencic on bass guitar and lead vocals. This group stayed together for about two years until the departure of Davor and Bobby in 1994. After they left, Zrinski re-grouped and picked up the young Nick Barbic ..boards and accordion, and Bosko Ciklic on lead vocals. At this time, Tommy Bele joined the band as the new bass player. That Zrinski stayed together for three years until 1997, when John left to spend some time in Holland. Nick and Tommy started another band called "More", but it only lasted for a few years until John returned in 1999. During this re-grouping, Mirijana Dragojevic joined the band as the new lead singer and stayed with the band until late 2003. Ray Solario also joined the band and played bass for a few years. In early 2004, Martin Kolega joined the band bringing new energy and is currently the lead singer. In 2007, Mike Mandich, one of the best drummers around, retired and was replaced by Jonathan Barbic...yes, Nick's younger brother. The band is now made up of John Berkovich, Tommy Bele, Nick Barbic, Jonathan Barbic and Martin Kolega.
Since the forming of the group and throughout the years, Zrinski has performed and has entertained people throughout Southern California and beyond, playing at parties, weddings, dinners, clubs, picnics, and most other events you can think of. During the early years, Zrinski performed at various fundraising events in support of Croatia's struggle for independence. The St. Anthony's picnics at Alpine Village were also memorable events. For the past 15 consecutive years, Zrinski has provided entertainment for the Croatian Independence Day street party in San Pedro...always a good festa! The street party is one of the biggest celebrations around...if you haven't been, you should come with a group of your friends.
We are excited about things to come and enjoy being a part of this community, and are proud to keep our Croatian heritage and culture alive through music. If you've seen us, you know that we like to have fun...some of us a little too much! We love to see people dancing, singing, and having a good time with us. Please feel free to send us your thoughts or just say hello. If you have any cool group pictures from an event, send them our way and we'll post them. We would like to meet Croatian people from all over. Maybe we'll come to your city sometime soon. If you have any requests for songs that you really think we should play...just let us know and we'll do our best.
