DSW Shoes Summer '07 ad, featuring Jonny's Bugalu by Grupo X
Influences
Eddie Palmieri, Manny Oquendo y Conjunto Libre, Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe, Orquesta Novel and many more, as well as all the great artists we've had the pleasure of working with over the years: Jimmy Bosch, Jimmy Sabater, Tito Allen, Orlando Watussi, Jack Costanzo, Bobby Matos, Johnny Blas, Dave Pike, Alfredo Rodriguez.
Grupo X was formed in 1996 by trombonist/composer Jonny Enright. Combining the raw-edged sounds of 60s and 70s Latin New York with influences from closer to home Grupo X create an unique sound from the UK.
Grupo X’s sound is defined by their highly-rated albums, X-Posure (2001) and Food For Your Latin Soul (2006) as well as successful vinyl releases on Loft Records, Brand New Love and X-perience, both featuring the vocal talents of Lisa Millett. Their latest album, Grupo X Remixed (LOFT 2008), gives a fresh slant on favourite tunes, as well as a first release for classic "lost" track, Whatever You Dream.
Described by NuYorican trombone legend Jimmy Bosch as ‘totally kick ass’, Grupo X has a reputation for crowd-pleasing, energetic performances. As house band for the Jazz Café’s Hi-Hat and Messin’ Around club nights, they’ve graced the stage alongside US percussion kings Johnny Blas and Bobby Matos, ‘Mr Bongo’ Jack Costanzo, Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez, vibes legend Dave Pike, percussionist/ singer Jimmy Sabater and top salsa trombonist Jimmy Bosch.
Spun heavily by international DJs including Louie Vega, Bobbito Garcia, Gilles Peterson, Patrick Forge, Rainer Truby, Jazzanova, Snowboy, Nicola Conti, Grupo X original cuts have featured on numerous compilations, including: Snowboy Presents the Hi-Hat (Ocho), Viva Cubop II (Cubop), For Adults Only (Lounge), Vocalise (Unfold), A Little Night Music (Kudos), On the Right Track (Do Right)
Beginner's Guide To Latin (Nascente) and Beginner's Guide to Salsa (Nascente).
"Grupo X are the UK's answer to Nuyorican Soul - a fantastic mix of Latin & Soul perfect for the modern listener. One of my favourite groups in the world today."
Adrian Gibson, Jazz Cafe, London
" Jonny Enright and his band have cooked-up an album that veritably oozes with sabor, which is Latino-speak for taste and flavour."
John Child, descarga.com
"Sublime UK Latin soul that kicks from start to finish. Thoroughly recommended - quality stuff."
Malcolm Prangell, Blues and Soul
"Quality Latin music from London that’s totally British, not just a carbon copy."
DJ Lubi Jovanovic, Straight No Chaser
