GRYFFEN began as the answer to all the barbed, bloodletting questions that young open hearted radio victims like Sergio Abegao have been asked since life really began; at the flashpoint of lust, with their first kiss, their first fight, since the first time they ran toward or away from anything. Since first setting paper to voice and fingers to strings as a teen, the singer/songwriter roamed between Vancouver, Lisbon, Portugal and Toronto forging songs of Love, death, honour, technology and revolution. He joined some fellow Toronto area locals and together, they cut their teeth and built their muscle on nights in cafes and bars, taking in lessons from the rock education while trying to reach out to for something more.
After what started as a minor change in line-up became a complete overhaul, the heart and muscle of the group, Sergio and drum punisher Terry Koch, rebuilt themselves with indie co-conspirator Jay Nadler, who chose the bass as his voice for this team and they christened themselves with a new name and direction. They decided rock is not enough. With the songs Sergio crafted under his arm, Terrys drums as a battering ram, Jays bass moving in mysterious ways and the neon light shone by new brother Georg Feil ..s, GRYFFEN morphed from stick figure rock outfit into a kinetic, atmospheric force to be listened to.
Each member comes from a distinct corner of the musical landscape. Never once had it crossed the minds of these soldiers to swap CDs of their personal preference; only their innate ideas. Thrusting forward with individual swords aloft, the battle-cries of such blastacious hymns like Quickening and Goldman, with addictive and intelligent melodies and lyrics such as Changing Again and Gimme All You Got, are sure to jet-set over the mediocrity of modern pop music. Diversity of influences fuel the oxygen-starved embers that beg to blaze, only then to be left in a heaping pile of contented bliss. Visionaries of harmonial enlightenment, GRYFFEN want you to dance, they want you to chant, they want you to cry and pump your fists in the air and they refuse to accept that these cant be done at the same show, or even in the same song all in one night, all on one album.
With its headquarters hidden in the space between awake and dreaming, one hand between her thighs and the other waving the flag, GRYFFEN will be releasing their first official demo, "Eyes Wide by Flare Light" in late 2006.
