Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity's Interests
GeneralLGBT Awareness Week returns this October for our third annual week of LGBT-centered programming. LGBT Awareness Week serves as the main programming function to the broader Georgia State community by the Alliance in the fall semester. This year, look for the fourth annual Talk About It forum, a special showing of For the Bible Tells Me So, a special performance by a high-profile member of the LGBT community, and our new dance/drag program called The Escapade.
MusicThe Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity is proud to announce the debut of The Exhibition: An Alternative Night of Talent. The Exhibition, the Alliance’s first drag show since 2005, is designed to be a high-energy presentation of LGBT students and their allies at Georgia State performing a wide variety of drag numbers. Auditions for The Exhibition will be held March 12 at 7:00 pm in Room 480 University Center. Participants need to bring any accompanying music and be able to (at least) give a description of what their performance will entail, though we prefer demonstrations of dance moves, etc. The Exhibition itself will take place on March 21 at 7:00 pm in Speaker’s Auditorium (GSU Student Center). If you have any questions, please email Elijah Sarkesian at esarkesian1@student.gsu.edu.

TelevisionArticle I: Name Section 1: Formal Name The formal name of the organization is the Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity. This name shall be used for all formal business related to the university and the community at large. Section 2: Informal Names Informal names for the organization include the Alliance and GSU Alliance. Article II: Purpose Section 1: Goals of the Organization The Alliance exists to provide a safe, fun, and educational environment to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer students and their allies. The group is also intended to provide an organizational framework for political action, and to provide outreach to the broader queer community. Section 2: Execution Our activities will consist of social events, educational panels, and volunteer activities to be determined by the executive board of the organization. Article III: Affiliations The Alliance has no formal affiliation to any external organization but is encouraged to involve other LGBT groups such as YouthPride, Queer Progressive Agenda, and AIDAtlanta in its activities. Article IV: Membership The Alliance has no formal membership requirements. All students may attend organizational functions. Article V: Executive Board Section 1: Executive Board Makeup The executive board consists of a President, a Vice President, a Secretary, and four officers (or chairs). Section 2: Election of the Executive Board Elections for an academic year will be spread over the course of the year. For an academic year, the President, Vice President, and Secretary will be voted in at the end of the prior academic year during the last official meeting of the year, as determined by the executive board. Undergraduate students are eligible to run if they are currently enrolled in courses for the following fall and were active in the organization for a majority of the collective year. Candidates must be present at the time of elections in order to be voted into office (unless extenuating circumstances prevent the candidate from appearing, at which point the candidate must inform members of the executive board in a reasonable amount of time). The term for the positions of President, Vice President, and Secretary will last from the date of election until the following election for the positions in the spring of the following academic year (not to exceed more than one year and one month per term). The positions of Volunteer Chair, Education Chair, Activism Chair, and Public Relations Chair will be filled in the fall of the academic year during the third meeting. Candidates in the fall must be in attendance at all three meetings in order to be eligible if they are new to Georgia State University, whether as a freshman or transfer student. If the candidate attended a majority of meetings in the previous year, attendance requirements for the fall will be reduced to two out of the three meetings, with the third meeting being mandatory. Exceptions from this policy must be approved by the current executive board members prior to an absence. The term for the positions of Volunteer Chair, Education Chair, Activism Chair, and Public Relations Chair will last for one semester, with the option of reelection in the following (spring) semester. Potential officer candidates are required to submit a statement of qualification to the Alliance membership and must be elected by a majority of the members in attendance. In the event of a tie, the tiebreaker will be provided by the Advisor. The election process is supervised by the current President and Vice President. It is mandatory that, in the counting of votes, at least two witnesses review and verify the results. The results will be counted by the President. Additional elections are allowed when needed to fill any vacancies in the executive board due to resignation, removal, etc. The executive board will determine the necessity of elections to fill vacancies. If the board elects not to hold elections, all duties of the vacant office will fall to the remaining officers. Section 3: General Executive Board Requirements Executive board members are expected to attend a majority of meetings and events. If an officer cannot fulfill this duty, the officer may request exemption from this duty; the executive board will decide whether or not to grant exemption. It is recommended that each officer make a presentation for at least one meeting per month. Executive board members should schedule a minimum of one office hour per week. This hour (or more) can be scheduled to fit into each board member’s personal schedule. Section 4: President The President will be the official president of the Alliance to the University, and is the head coordinator of all events for the Alliance. The President will be the public voice of the Alliance to media organizations (Southern Voice, Rampway, The Signal), and will share public relations duties with the Public Relations Chair. Responsibilities include ensuring reservations for the year, maintaining all relationships with the various parts of the University (including communication with the Advisor), and maintaining the financial status of the Alliance. The President will start each meeting and will have parliamentary authority over both executive board and general meetings. In addition, the President will be in charge of the Alliance website and listserv, though operation of both can be delegated to another officer if deemed necessary, and will maintain a book containing information on both. The President also supervises the tasks and duties of all other officers. In the event of resignation of the President, the office will be filled by the Vice President. Section 5: Vice President The Vice President is responsible for collaborating in the creation of meeting topics and external events with the Volunteer Chair, Education Chair, Activism Chair, and Public Relations Chair. The Vice President will finalize plans with the President. In addition, in the absence of the President at a general body meeting, the Vice President will assume standard meeting protocols. For official business on behalf of the Alliance, the Vice President will join the President in appearances. In the event of the President’s resignation, the Vice President will assume the role of the President. The Vice President will report directly to the President. In the event of resignation by the Secretary, the Vice President will assume all duties for the position until the next regularly scheduled election, or until an emergency election is chosen by the executive board Section 6: Secretary The Secretary will be in charge of recording minutes of general body meetings and executive board meetings, and will be responsible for a book containing said minutes. The Secretary will present the minutes at the beginning of each meeting. The Secretary will also maintain a book with how-to guides for various annual events (Unity Conference, Pride, etc.), a running list of past meetings and potential meeting ideas, and a calendar. The Secretary will report directly to the President. In the event that the Vice President is unable to take over for the President should the President resign, the Secretary will take over as President of the Alliance. In the event of resignation by the Vice President, the Secretary will assume all duties for the position until the next regularly scheduled election, or until an emergency election is chosen by the executive board. Section 7: Volunteer Chair The Volunteer Chair is responsible for organizing activities that assist the broader community. This often involves collusion with other volunteer organizations, such as AIDAtlanta or Helping Hands. While a queer focus is encouraged, volunteer activities need not be focused entirely on one community. In addition, the Volunteer Chair will be responsible for all fundraising opportunities, whether the goal is to benefit the Alliance or another organization. The officer in this chair will report directly to the President, and will collaborate on the creation of programs and activities associated with this position with the Vice President. Section 8: Education Chair The Education Chair is responsible for maintaining the educational purpose of the organization. The chair is responsible for organizing lectures with faculty members, forming discussion groups, and viewing relevant films. In addition, the Education Chair will work with other organizations on promoting information on safe sex practices, sexually transmitted diseases, and other relevant subject matters. The officer in this chair will report directly to the President, and will collaborate on the creation of programs and activities associated with this position with the Vice President. Section 9: Activism Chair The Activism Chair is responsible for maintaining the organization’s political focus. This may mean participations in rallies and marches (the Alliance has traditionally participated in June Pride, September Pride, and the MLK march). Other possibilities include collusion with the Education Chair. The officer in this chair will report directly to the President, and will collaborate on the creation of programs and activities associated with this position with the Vice President. Section 10: Public Relations Chair The Public Relations Chair is responsible for organizing recreational, socially-oriented activities for the group. These have historically included games, movie nights, socials, poetry readings, bowling, etc. Though some of these activities can be placed in lieu of the weekly meeting, most social events created by the Public Relations Chair should occur outside of the regular meeting time. In addition, the Public Relations Chair is responsible for advertising and promoting all Alliance events, including those events created by other officers. The officer in this chair will report directly to the President, and will collaborate on the creation of programs and activities associated with this position with the Vice President. Article VI: Advisor The Advisor is democratically selected by the executive board and may serve as long as the board and the faculty in question see fit. The Advisor must be a faculty member of Georgia State University. Article VII: Meetings Section 1: General Meetings General meetings are generally to be held every Thursday at 7:00 PM. Some flexibility may be necessary, but the officers are strongly encouraged to produce some sort of activity for each week. Section 2: Executive Board Meetings Officer meetings are held when necessary, but are suggested to occur at least three times per year. A newly elected board must meet at least once before their general meetings begin. Co-presidents will meet at least once a month. The Secretary is required to take notes of important decisions and to distribute them to the other officers via email. Article VIII: Quorum Major decisions may be enacted when 3/5 of the officer panel is present. Article IX: Referendum and Impeachment Procedures Section 1: Referendum Requirements Issues of considerable importance such as referendums or officer removal must be decided by a majority vote of the executive board once a quorum is reached. Section 2: Impeachment Requirements and Procedures If an officer is deemed ineffective and unfulfilling of duties, a written warning will be issued by the board to the officer. If the officer continues to neglect the duties of the office, the board must be unanimous in their impeachment. Article X: Amendments Amendments must be submitted in writing to the executive board with at least seven days notice and approved by at least 3/5 of the present panel. A unanimous decision of the board to forego the seven day wait may be enacted whenever deemed necessary by the entire board. Once the constitution is amended, notification of the change must be emailed to all members. Article XI: Anti-Hazing Policy This organization prohibits its members, both individually and collectively from committing any acts of hazing. Article XII: Organization Agreement The Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity agrees to abide by the Georgia State Code of Conduct. Furthermore, agrees to abide by all Student Life and Leadership policies as outlined in the student handbook; to check the organization’s mailbox regularly; to communicate via email upon request; to update the organization’s records whenever there is a change and submit a petition for renewal by May 1st of each year. Article XIII: Dissolution For financial purposes, in the event of the organization’s dissolution, all remaining financial assets not provided by Georgia State University will be transferred to Georgia State University with the intention of continuing the advancement of diversity programs, specifically those targeting the LGBT community and their allies.

About me:
The Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity at Georgia State University is the oldest gay-straight student alliance in Georgia! Founded in 1982, we’re now celebrating 26 years as one of GSU’s most successful student organizations! Since then we’ve grown to be one of the largest chartered student organizations on campus, now with over 600 members. Things to look forward to: In addition to our weekly meetings, which range from informational sessions with our members to outings to local attractions, the Alliance also branches out to help the greater Georgia community through cooperation with other diversity organizations. Some examples include: * Participation in the annual LGBT Leadership Summit held at Kennessaw State University. * Organizing groups for local events like the Atlanta Pride Festival and AIDS Walk Atlanta. * Formation of Cinema Q, a new film series that highlights queer and queer-related film offerings. * Continuation of The Exhibition, the Alliance’s drag show series that launched in March 2008, with the production of the second annual show in February 2009 and a spinoff of the show, The Escapade, coming in October 2008. Highlights In 2002, we were named Organization of the Year by Georgia State University! We’ve also been recognized by the Human Rights Campaign, Fox 5 News Atlanta, and Southern Voice. In 2005, the Alliance was honored with a Phoenix Award from the City of Atlanta and Mayor Shirley Franklin! Most recently, the first annual production of The Exhibition was named Social Program of the Year by Georgia State University. About Georgia State University Georgia State University, founded in 1913, has a mission of excellence in teaching, research and service. Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, this major research university has an enrollment of more than 27,000 undergraduate and graduate students in six colleges. Georgia State is the second largest university in the state, with students coming from every county in Georgia, every state in the nation and from over 145 countries.
