Sounds Like
Dave Matthews and Pearl Jam-ish, that's what some people say, but frankly this is it's own thing. Check it out for yourself.
Guarro's debut Album Plan-B is available from guarro.net or from iTunes in the UK, and now also from rec.ords.us
Check out the great pictures of Guarro at Spain's Azkena Rock Festival in the summer of 2006.
GUARRO (meaning filthy or pig in Spanish) was formed when Acton born and bred Marcos D'Cruze asked himself this question: What would happen if he tried to combine his skill as a flamenco guitarist with rock n roll? Intrigued, he set about finding the answer.
What he found was this - an honest expression of his musical, urban and cultural heritage, a new kind of rock n roll thats amplified not by volume (although theres plenty of that), but by the sheer ferocity that is inevitable when a flamenco guitarist finds that elusive duende that almost inexplicable surge of power and spirit that cannot be faked, that does away with all that is superfluous in a song and transforms the performance into something desperate and pure.
Equally as unique are D'Cruzes words - he grasps at the truth in a language of simple, emotional directness, singing with a stark honesty about what life is like for him, and for all of us. Its a world away from the formulaic blandness so prevalent in every acoustic guitar toting troubadour out there.
After much searching, Marcos finally found the players brave (and good) enough to embark on this new music with him - Huw Davies on lead guitar, Steve Davis on bass, and Lee Morris smacking seven shades of whatever out of the drum kit. And in the middle of this glorious noise is D'Cruze, playing rhythm, lead, bass and percussion, all on one Spanish guitar.
Theyve gigged around London in all the usual venues including Bush Hall, Half Moon Putney, The Bull & Gate, Islington Carling Academy and the Hope and Anchor, all the while building up a cult following, with fans as diverse as Jeff Wayne, KT Tunstall, Ewan McGregor and Jack Good. But, like The Libertines and The Others, theyve also embraced the new gigging ethic of taking it to the people, playing sweaty shows in fans front rooms, and always finding more people at the next show because of it.
What happens when you combine flamenco with rock n roll? You get Guarro, and like they say in all the movie trailers, in a world where formula is king, here is one band that dares to be different.
