MUSIC WITH MEANING
Electronica and alternative rock fuse beautifully, creating a powerful, international sound on Gudrun Holck’s second album, STÆRK(Strong), released on January 19’th 2009. The lyrics are as raw as her voice, and Strong is so much more than a 12 - track electronica soundscape contribution to a great party.
The album is released on the label MUSIC IS THE WEAPON. A label that wants to use music in the fight for a better world. Gudrun Holck stands for a respectful tone in the Danish social debate, and she focuses, among other things, on women’s strong sexuality.
- You are a strong woman!
Is how Gudrun Holck has often heard herself described. It has made her ask the question: when is it alright to be vulnerable? And out of that an album has emerged.
Strong focuses on the human dilemma of being tough, and it questions the way the strong human being acts and reacts in a globalised world, as well as the way a strong human being is perceived by others in that world.
- I feel shameful and provoked when Ilisten to the tone of the public debate in Denmark, like in the Cartoon Crises.., during which Iwrote & recorded the song ..Them & Us... 20 years ago you would have been sued for using the language we hear everywhere today.
I’m not an immigrant but I think I’ll emigrate, if this doesn’t come to an end soon.
I experience intolerance too! Is how Gudrun Holck verbalises it in the single DANS DANMARK(Dance Denmark!), out now along with More Hardcore 4 The Woman, where the groundbreaking message is: More sex for women! Gudrun Holck does not point her finger at anybody, but looks inside herself and tells her own stories in a topical and recognisable way. As in I Slam That Door where she talks about loving an alcoholic - about the disappointments, the anger, and the powerlessness.
Breaking Taboos
The Danish singer admirable reveals herself on Strong. It’s intimate, close, and per¬sonal. She brings her listeners into a dance universe, where taboos exist in order to be broken, and where life thrives in multitude. Gudrun Holck does not have a bleeding heart, but a profound and accurate honesty, hard beats, and an obvious international appeal both textually and musically. The re-remix of electronica and alternative rock is followed by an Nordic exotic cocktail with both Danish and English lyrics. Strong is the result of three years collaboration with five different international producers, and throughout the twelve tracks Gudrun Holck manages to hold on to her strong Fela Kuti inspiration; the father of afro-beat and internationally renowned for his political engagement.

GUDRUN HOLCK er på trapperne med sit andet soloalbum, STÆRK, som udkommer d. 19. Januar 2009. Hun har søgt nye musikalske veje og samarbejdet med producere fra bl.a. USA, Italien, Norge, Cameroun og Danmark med forskellige musikalske rødder i både sangskrivning og produktion. Det har især bragt hende tæt på electronica samt givet hende inspiration fra Trip-Hop og soundtracks til film.
’Alt starter stadig med sang’ for Gudrun Holck og Gudruns vokal er hendes helt særegne mix af Global Vokal. Men hvor hendes solo debut album ’Muse’ fra 2004 var helt akustisk, tages der på det kommende album nu et kvantespring ind i den kreative electronica-scenes fagre, eventyrlige verden med loops og samplinger fra etniske instrumenter og ursang samt lydoptagelser fra hendes rejser. Det har bl.a. bragt Grønland på banen i nummeret ’Ajaja’.
Der er selvfølgelig sang og chants i mange afskygninger og teksterne er meget personlige, hvoraf de fleste denne gang er på dansk.
Det bærende tema for det nye album STÆRK er 'Music is the weapon', som Gudrun videregiver fra sin læremester i Nigeria, den nu afdøde afrobeatskaber Fela Kuti.
Herfra holder hun også fast i traditionen med at skabe sange ovenpå råsvingende grooves, som man kan danse til...
