About me: This site is dedicated to my family's efforts in creating a Urban Homestead in Downtown San Bernardino. We purchased our 'fixer upper' 1924 California Bungalow in 2005. It was a dream come true. It was an efficient home and a decent sized lot. Somewhere along the road of life, the 'homesteader' dream took back seat to school, adopting our children, birth and death. Now its time to get back on that hoe (no pun intended). This past April, we planted a native california garden just to get out green thumbs goin'. So far so Good! Check back often to inquire, reflect, give advice, or come on over for a peak at our attempt at a more simple, sustainable, way of life, our way!
Steps we've taken to so far:
*switched to 90% cloth diapers(homemade from stuff around
the house)the other 10% is biodegradable diapers for day trips.
*cloth wipes
* Small 2 tier tire garden
*backyard chickens (coops built from found, salvaged materials)
*energy efficient bulbs through home (except the bathroom which has no electricity at all)
*planted several berry bushes
*no more microwave
*home built vermicomposting bins (built from salvaged materials)
*traditional composting bin (built from salvaged materials)
*locavore diet
*homemade cleaners
*minimal appliences
*cast iron instead of teflon cookware
* clothing recycling
*cloth grocery bags
*cloth trash can liners
*recycling, recycling, recycling!
*no central heating or cooling
*solar cooking (as of 4/2008)
* in the works- pedal powered washing machine
*line dry when possible
We still have a long way to go yet!!!
