   關於 Brian Miller

I became interested in playing Irish music as a 17-year-old in my decidedly non-Irish hometown of Bemidji, Minnesota. Since 1998 I have lived in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, though I've also spent a sizable chunk of the last 8 years in Cork, Ireland. I back tunes on guitar using the DADGAD tuning. While attending a semester of college at UCC in Cork in 2000 I took up the flute. I also sing and I am the founder of the Twin Cities Traditional Singers Club.

As a member of a number of traditional Irish music groups and duos including Bua, The Tommie Cunniffe Trio, Norah Rendell and Brian Miller, The Two Tap Trio, The Doon Ceili Band, 5 Mile Chase and Laura and the Lads, I have performed throughout the US and in Canada and Ireland.

I am currently researching, arranging and performing songs that were sung by lumberjacks who worked in Minnesota in the late 1800s. The songs above: "Caroline of Edinburgh", "The Roving Irishman" and "The Lumberman's Alphabet" were learned from transcriptions of Minnesotan lumberjack singers. More about my lumberjack songs project..

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
    Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
    Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
    The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
    Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
    Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
    Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
    Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
    Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
    Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
    Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

Just to let you know, LOUDRAY is still holding church on Thursdays.

We've been holding it down there for 10 months and as our 1 year anniversary of this residency approaches we are stepping up the revival.  For the past 8 months we've been joined by some of the finest musicians in town (Martin Devaney, Ric Lee, Glenn Hanson, Dave Babb, Jake Hyer, Kurt Froelich, Meg Ashling, Zach Gusa, Eric Larson, Jen Markey, Mother Banjo, Eliza Blue, Pete Bauer, just to name a few) but for the next 2 months, it's just going to be the classic LOUDRAY duo of Jon Stowell and Colin Anderson.  We will be digging deep into the back catalog of songs and bringing some new light through these old windows.

We have been doing these shows in the classic "unamplified" style as of late and look to continue that trend.

So, stop in for some fellowship and true acoustic music, and wash away the week with sweet, redeeming booze.

$2.75 select taps from 5-7pm!!!  Plenty of parking!!

Come on, isn't it time to slum it at the Dub!!

(please see my blog):
WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN

Once drove an old sedan, up north,
From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.

I browsed through the trendy market,
With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.

I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.”

Request or question, I don’t know -
Assured voices, elderly men.
That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

Hello Friends and Family

Tomorrow Thursday May 7, 2009 Iron Horse will be hosting a Music For Food Benefit Drive at Wyatt Earp’s 7550 Hwy 10 Ramsey MN 55303. The benefit concert starts at 8:30 pm; there will be a silent auction with all the proceeds from the auction going to the ACBC Anoka Food Shelf. For every dollar we earn they are able to distribute nine dollars in food items to families in need. Local businesses have donated vouchers for services for the auction and these items will be on display for your bidding pleasure.

Also there will be a food collection point for all the non-perishable donations. Last year the food shelf distributed over 300,000 pounds of food to families in need and they had a demand for twice that amount. So we are asking for can goods, dry foods and other non-perishables to help the food shelf meet the growing demand of families in need. There is a list of items they need below.

We realize many of you have to work Friday and we join you in that quest each member of Iron Horse will be reporting to their jobs on Friday morning with a heart full of knowing that they helped a good cause. We ask that you come even if just for a short time. This is for a really good cause and it will help so many families. Families of people you know or someone in your family may one day need the help of the Food Shelf and what we collect on Thursday may go a long way in helping them.

We thank you all for your support and appreciate the HOPE you will help us pass on. Also you can view the video for the benefit at our website www.ironhorserocks.com or www.wyattearpsbar.com or simply follow the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deci0g6z298

Hey Buddy,

Great finding you here! I may be old, but I am still hip. Hope you are always enjoying making good music...and I hope we meet back up again sometime soon. Next time I get up there, I'll try and look you up.

As for me...I'm on a Joseph Spence kick these days. Go figure.

Be well, Brian! Here's what Coon Valley looks like right now!
