The GumboProject is a down and dirty New Orleans-style funk band based in Santa Fe, NM. Founded by New Orleans drummer David Waldrop, The GumboProject brings the sounds of the dirty south to the mountain west.
David Waldrop is a drummer who "relocated" to Santa Fe from New Orleans shortly after Hurricane Katrina. He played drums professionally in NOLA, learning his chops from New Orleans great such as Johnny Vidacovich, Mean Willie Green, and Russell Batiste. He was the drummer for Big Chief Monk Boudreaux's band Big Medicine and for Eric Lindell's Band and played with John Lisi & Delta FUNK!, West Bank Mike and the Fisher Project, and Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band, to name a few. He specializes in Second-Line, Jazz, and New Orleans-style FUNK. He started The GumboProject in an effort to give back to the people of New Mexico for opening their arms and supporting him and his family since their relocation after Katrina.
Mark Dempsey is a slammin' keyboard player with magic fingers specializing in the Vintage Style. He utilizes the unique sounds of the Hammond B3, piano, and clav. He came to Santa Fe from Cincinnati, where he was tearing up the keys as the keyboardist for the local favorite Funk-Fusion band Souse, which incorporates the styles of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis to name a few. Prior to that, Mark was the founder of the jam band project Travelin' Barefoot, another band which also had great regional success in the midwest. He has been playing professionally since the age of 16 and his passion for the music he plays show in his fiery solos and smooth improvisational abilites.
Pablo Champion, The GumboProject's funky-ass bass player, is also an amazingly gifted classically-trained musician and music teacher. Having studied at New York's Eastman School of Music, he is a versatile musician whose musical passion encompasses everything from Jaco Pastorius to Bach to Led Zeppelin. He is an accomplished guitar player as well as bassist and teaches music at Santa Fe's Waldorf School. He explains his musical repertoire by saying that he learned to play the blues and funk and rock and roll, then studied classical music for many years and now has "come back home again."
