The Gunkhole sound is a fusion of hip hop, jazz, rock, and more. The band features three musicians on turntables playing lead and rhythmic melodies while the drummer provides the backbeat. Along with playing the role of a traditional instrument like a guitar or keyboard, the turntables can be manipulated to create extremely unorthodox sounds and effects. Music is composed live and is determined by the moment; it differs from a jam session in that the songs have structure while the songs' elements are improvised. In other words, the music is totally off the head, but there is nonetheless a constructive process, i.e., movements within movements. The audio clip is an exerpt from a show in Bologna, Italy, which will be presented in full in an upcoming DVD.
